This is grandstanding for public opinion. Russia would be best off continuing as they are and letting Ukraine come onto them in Kursk whilst they whittle away at Ukrainian resources and continue the grind in the east.

Ukraine will be portraying this as a win and that he's rattled.

Unless Putin knows something we don't about the next 6 weeks of course. Perhaps he doesn't want a big chunk of Ukrainian experienced forces currently in Kursk to move east so he's offering a challenge as bait to keep them there until October.

I think the biggest fear for the Russians is that the nuclear power plant in Kursk isn't targeted. That has to be a risk from a desperate Ukrainian state faced with being over run in the east of Ukraine and Donetsk falling into Russian hand forever.

If it weren't for that I think the Russians would be relatively 'happy' to contain those Ukrainian units and deal with them in good time.

Let's hope that the power plant stays separated from this and we don't have to worry about it.

I was watching CH4 News earlier and there was a piece on it with a returning Ukrainian soldier going back to Sumy oblast saying that plant is next.

Apparently it has 6 reactors and is an older type of facility like Chernobyl. It wouldn't take much of an attack to cause the conditions for a meltdown.

If Ukraine are in a situation where they're losing all control of the east...

How does an RBMK reactor core explode?

I hope that soldier was just a gobshite acting up for the camera.

Yeah, me too.

I could easily see that as a last desperate throw of the dice though. Retreat back to their own territory and leave that nightmare and blame it on Russia.

Let's hope the yanks (and German and UK) are reading them the riot act on that.

Again, let's hope that this is all hyperbole and we don't have to worry about it.
