Ukraine has also dropped the bridge at zvannoye and have the only other river seym crossing in that zone at Karyzch, under direct fire control -so yes it does protect their western flank. It also effectively cuts off Russian support to the town of Korenevo from the south and west. They have the town effectively now surrounded with up to 700 troops inside. They will have to surrender now or die.

So clearly, contrary to what Field Marshall von @davek has claimed there is a strategy

BBC 6 0'clock News tonight: I thought that was a telling end to the piece on the war when the reporter stated that "Ukraine's objectives seem to be shifting away from liberation and toward producing bargaining chips for a future peace deal".

I doubt that he misspoke. The BBC reporters operate under a tight messaging brief and that will probably be the message from the top of the British state - that liberation is not possible.

Increasingly I think we're hurtling toward negotiations. And not before time.

Mr Goat: my position in this thread has always been a consistent "neither Washington nor Moscow but international socialism". I've talked the language of peace throughout and linked only news from the MSM - unlike the tripe posted by many from war porn blogs.

Jaw Jaw not War War is my point of view on this conflict now.

Let's stop the bombs falling and let's start the talks.

What would be your ideal outcome if it could stop today?

Fair to say Ukrainian Army has shown an ability here this week to perform combined armed force manoeuvres most Countries can only dream about.

I wouldn't go that far. It does show that they are a professional and competent armed force who can do combined arms. Box ticked for NATO membership

For the Russian speaking territories in the east to be guaranteed they wont be the subject to the bombardment they received from 2012 and Russian forces to remove back over the border.

But that cant happen because Kyiv would never agree to that and Moscow would never surrender their hard fought gains.

So the reality is we should be looking for a solution that freezes everything as it is and Kyiv accepts that and then rebuilds its own destroyed infrastructure and helps its own people to get back to a decent quality of life, aided by western reconstruction money.

Pretty good analogy. And it's held. As will any future peace deal between Ukraine and Russia - if the meddling western powers dont stick their oars in.

If the meddling western powers didn't stick their oars in , by that I take it you mean NATO ?
Without it Putin would take every former Satellite state within the vicinity.
Then what Norway , Poland or worse.
The man is a punch drunk ex KGB scumbag with delusions of Russian grandeur and never ever to be trusted.

He wants the old USSR back in situ , there is no peace with Putin.
Surprised you can't see that.
