Well reports from overnight suggest that the Russians handed the Ukrainian positions in Kursk an absolute pounding and a lot of men were lost. The incursion has well and truly ground to a halt.

I think Zelensky has gone way beyond what Washington condoned, and they did that to try and force the hand of the west to allow a Ukrainian fightback as Russian forces relentlessly march on in the Donbas to Pokrovsk to cut off a major highway and put them in reach of shelling rail lines that serve as a critical supply line for Ukrainian troops.

The Kursk incursion has been a desperate move from Kyiv. They need to withdraw from Russia and get some sort of peace deal. My guess is though that as in Bakhmut and Avdiivka Zelensky and his Generals will command that expeditionary force to remain and perish in Russia. It was a suicide mission and the coming days and weeks will see thousands more Ukrainian troops lose their lives clinging onto something that cant be secured.
I haven't checked the overnight position. If Russia is going all out, then it could fall over very quickly for the Ukrainians (if it's sustainable for Russia to do so). I presume that Ukraine has not put in defensive works to withstand any major efforts from Russia compared to what we have seen in Donbass where they have forced Russia to grind it out at huge cost.

I would not be surprised if Russia takes over the vast majority of the Donbass and the US presidential elections take place. This gives a focus point for a deal and asks the US electorate who do you want in if you want the support for Ukraine to continue or a deal done. That will be a key point for a deal to be done - we shall see what we shall see.

On the last point: we all know this conflict will end very quickly if Trump gets in, but I'm not too sure the re-election of a Democratic administration is the nailed on green light for their objectives that the Ukrainians appear to think it will be.

The last week or so will underline to Harris - if it's to be her - that handing more advanced weapons over to Zelensky's regime is a slippery slope to the type of escalation no new American president would want on their plate.

I'm hopeful that this war can be settled with a peace deal once the US presidential elections are out of the way. Maybe serious talks begin before spring next year, before the re-start of any major and more damaging offensives can be launched, and we'll see Washington and Moscow thrash out a deal - if need be over the heads of the Ukrainians.

The way he posted the first time and everybody ignored him, so he dropped another.

The dirty, dirty little Russian bot.
Mr Goat: my position in this thread has always been a consistent "neither Washington nor Moscow but international socialism". I've talked the language of peace throughout and linked only news from the MSM - unlike the tripe posted by many from war porn blogs.

Jaw Jaw not War War is my point of view on this conflict now.

Let's stop the bombs falling and let's start the talks.

If the Welsh started taking parts of England would you want jaw or war?

I'm half Welsh so I'd be conflicted.

I've always suspected @davek was a 5th columnist @Goat

Very true, Harris may want to row back on support depending on the situation if she gets in. Conversely, Trump might have little say in what happens if he gets in.

100% agree with this, very well worded mate 👍

Reading this, this makes the Ukrainian western flank on their advance more secure and cuts off the Russians to enable potential envelopment

So basically the land area the Ukrainians have seized or can get effective control appears severely underestimated within the Kursk oblast

Ukraine has also dropped the bridge at zvannoye and have the only other river seym crossing in that zone at Karyzch, under direct fire control -so yes it does protect their western flank. It also effectively cuts off Russian support to the town of Korenevo from the south and west. They have the town effectively now surrounded with up to 700 troops inside. They will have to surrender now or die.
