It’s another “ Battle Of The Bulge “ scenario. Then the Germans had a plan even if it failed. I can’t see what the Ukrainians plan is, unless it’s to relieve pressure on other salients.

They've captured territory, POW's for exchange and humiliated Putin and sown discourse in the Russian military blogger telegram channels with not that much effort. All with apparently, not too many losses.

If this is all this advance into Russia is, it's still a big win.

They hit this base over a year ago as well. Russia just doesn’t learn.
It’s likely a part of that, but also a result of Russia’s AD e being depleted and overstretched meaning they can’t adequately defend it.

How will Russia respond? Move vital air defences from other regions to protect Moscow and the air assets nearby?

It’s going to be bring it much closer to home for more and more Russians.

Aye. Ukraine are definitely stretching Russia at this time. They are targeting ammo dumps - mostly containing glide bombs, I guess to protect and support their offensive in the Kursk Oblast.

Would love to know how accurate allied intelligence is how much is being shared with Ukraine.
Stuff like where the glide bombs are being stored near the front and how much sigint is being picked up regarding troop movements and force size etc.

My guess is they’re fully plugged into the NATO intel net and receiving all the juicy stuff.

Add to that, Russian operational practices, including their use of communications, appears pretty lacklustre at best based on what we’ve seen.

So, they’ll be picking up a lot themselves alongside the intelligent the west is funnelling into them.

Was listening to sn interesting talk from a guy who works for a UN agency tasked with documenting war crimes. He talked about the bombing a few weeks back, of a children's hospital with a cruise missile. He went through the process of how they identify what and where the missile came from and so in and how they use the information to try and work out if companies/countries are bypassing sanctions.

The most interesting part was when he talked about how they can date and identify where the weapons are produced and what that says about Russian stockpiles and when sanctions are likely to have an effect (Russia had a large stockpile obviously before Feb '22).

The cruise missile that was was used in the bombing of the children's hospital was dated 2nd quarter of 2024, so anywhere from a couple of months to about a week before the strike. This suggests that they are using munitions almost as soon as they are made. Eventually they tech requirements to keep building these missile will become harder and harder to source.
