TBF I think (and sorry for repeating myself) that is such a misleading belief to have.
The Russian government just recognises what the Saudi, Israeli governments and various domestic business groups recognise - that the way US (and UK) politics works nowadays is that things are ran by incompetent people who lack the personal confidence, ability and genuine support to achieve any success in politics and so have to use money and networking to get into power. If we ever want to solve the horrendous mess these people have gotten us into, this system must be removed.

He actually said "western governments are afraid of what they control" when talking about censorship and "their media groups are corrupt"

He's an authoritarian mouthpiece. Anyone who will pay or has the potential to and he is in - Putin, Orban and Trump; and Putins new propaganda channel through his buddy Musk.
Musk has an eye on the mineral and manufacture needs of Tesla and SpaceX so is in bed with all that benefit his empire but you can imagine him thinking that he could be head of state, ruler of the world. Its like the makings of Marvel villain backstory evolving in real time.

They aren’t “leaning into Putin”, though - Putin does with them what MBS does, what Netanyahu has spent a lifetime doing and what the entire US healthcare lobby is built upon.
He (Putin) is absolutely taking advantage of the corrupt nature of US politics and media, but saying these are merely his puppets takes away all the responsibility for the situation being as it is.
I mean - if Russia had conducted no influence campaigns at all, Trump would almost certainly still have been the GOP nominee in 2016 and would almost certainly have beaten Hilary too - she was a terrible candidate who ran a terrible campaign. Carlson would still be taking extreme positions for the clicks and the viewing figures; he has been doing that since the start of his career.

We are in such a mess. Actual grifters from all walks of life having genuine sway in world politics (Carlson no doubt affecting the outcome of the US election and thus, Ukraine funding etc) at a time of near WW3.
I cannot see how any of this ends well.

It is very difficult to see a good outcome, but it will only happen if a large number of people who find themselves at the top of Western society recognize that they are in fact the problem and are the ones who need to urgently change their ways.
