I think the attacks on Crimea are bit of a 'tell' IMO.

The failure of the counter-offensive in the south and east necessitates a spectacular attack on Crimea every now and then to cover over the cracks. Given that the Russians moved a number of their ships away from the Black Sea we see an attack on an air defence system instead.

By destroying the AD systems first it gives them a better chance of destroying the p-800 Oniks / Bastion systems (land-based cruise missile) installations the Russians have in southern Crimea.

They’ll be next on the target list or maybe they were the target today.

My point is that it's a fairly easy target and one being used by the Ukrainians to deflect attention from the clear lack of meaningful progress (even setbacks) in the ground war in the south and east.

It’s certainly not an easy target. Those cruise missiles are the ones that target the grain silo’s, their industry and civilian infrastructure (hospitals).

I’d say they are a critical target and in order to get to them they first have to suppress or destroy the AD network protecting them.

Also why waste valuable ordanance such as storm Shadow or ATACMS on easy targets? They don’t have an endless supply. Those weapon systems will only be deployed to attack key deep-lying strategic targets.

To keep finding coming in by persuading the Yanks they're still in this war.

US just supplied a new batch of ATACMS this week. The storm shadows / SCALP are supplied by U.K. and France.

The targets in Crimea make perfect sense in a strategic scenario.
Right, and remember that (believe it or not) the US does have some people in the government that understand this stuff.

If Ukraine starts using the latest and greatest Western toys for cheap political theater, you can bet that the president and the members of the House and Senate Armed Services committees will hear about it.

NATO trained planners incompetence or home grown incompetence? Either way the counter offensive to take Crimea has failed.

It's time for the people to demand that Zelensky and his corrupt clique sue for a negotiated settlement.
