Armies have been split down into regiments, battalions, units, for ever. An organised army will have a very accurate idea of fatalities. How organised either side are atm is a point to consider, granted.

That isn't surprising given that they aren't releasing that information publicly.

I think they (and the Russians for what its worth) probably have a very good idea how many men they've lost; there have been very few instances on either side of units being overrun because someone has stuffed the roster with fake soldiers (in order to steal wages), which is usually the big indication that an army isn't paying attention to who it actually employs. The regular POW exchanges also imply both sides know who their soldiers are.

The carnage is terrible on both sides.

The winter will kick in and hopefully a ceasefire will be declared at least to get bodies off battlefields and repatriated. The dead should be respected.

I don't think there will be a ceasefire, I doubt Ukraine would go for it, as it would give Russia time to set up stronger defensive positions and the counter attack is progressing slowly as it is, bur recent reports are suggesting that lines are faltering and breakthroughs may not be far off.. Tomak is the goal if Ukraine reach Tomak then there is a real chance of ceasefire perhaps even proper negotiations for peace.

Why would the Ukrainians have a very good idea? This is a conscripted army don’t forget - new people roped in every day presumably and sent to the front line and who knows what happens then exactly ? Like for like is replaced I assume

They and we know they are in full mobilisation and conscription mode

This isn’t some kind of professional army where each and every individual or weapon is accounted for
