Unsure about that evaluation. You may need to research your thoughts further. Russia is exposed for being a despot nation and will need to be curtailed. I do agree it only means removing any existence of Russian troops in Ukraine. They don't want Russia to be decimated completely by attacking them directly on their turf and Russia knows this. US knows Russia will have at least a lost decade which they will be limited to cause more havoc.

It's a cash drain and the longer it goes on the less politically popular it's becoming, especially heading in to an election year.

I can see that but in the whole scheme of things the cost is insignificant compared to the destruction of Russian equipment and future economic struggles. I would also suggest manpower, but they could easily get 500k eager North Koreans to fight after their elite units are decimated.
