There's been mass protests in St Petersburg and organised protests in Moscow.

Athletes and Russian celebrities have been coming out for a while calling for peace.

The vast majority of that country do not want a war or care for Putin's petty games. But he'll go ahead with them anyway.

He won't care with these small protests, but pee enough people off then he'll need a lot of his army just to control his own people.

I understand how important Ukraine is in that sense and the general history behind the breakaway (and why they definitely still feel Russian in certain parts of the country)...

A cautious assesment by both governments.

I think he just wants to show the west he can do what he wants and they can't stop him. It's a show of force.

The timing after the US' botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and post-COVID too... plus Europe's reliance on Russian natural resources.
