Why is this still making the headlines, I wonder? There is obv not going to be a war in E. Ukraine, if Putin wanted to invade and annex part/all of Ukraine he wouldn't have waited this long. Shouldn't waste our time.
Are you talking about now his troops have amassed on his border or on a wider scale? The first point would be due to the ground needing to freeze.

It's all a bit confusing isn't it. On one hand we have USA and UK being pessimistic while the French and German reports express optimism in reaching a solution without violence.

Macron had a five hour talk yesterday. They discussed three things:
- withdrawal of 30.000 troops out of Belarus. Putin agreed
- neutral status for Ukraine, with garantuees for it's safety (not the same safety Nato offers)
- implementation of the Minsk-agreement

Good showing from the French PM, who's in close contact with Germany. A major victory for the European project if this ends well.

Hypocracy of the Russian oligarchs in the West a very good point.
Very relevant with regards to London as has been mentioned on here before.
The current government is riddled with people who have been compromised by taking the oligarch rouble.

They have embedded themselves into western institutions (not just London) to make it harder for them to be removed. And it's not just Russian but you can pick any questionable regime and they have individuals of dubious stature with a bolthole and access to assets here. We need to tackle this otherwise dodgy regimes will just run roughshod over us.

Punish Russia and the oligarchs laugh at it but the average person suffers. If they suffer enough then they could revolt. I'd far prefer us to hold a stance which means the wealthy from other nations can't use us as a place to launder their ill gotten gains and they mend their ways before the average person has to suffer.

This requires our government to be held to strict account. It would be a great foundation in dealing with nations we deem hostile in the future.

Putin has since come out and said he never agreed to anything.

Russian troops will withdraw from Belarus but only into Ukraine.

Smacks of desperation from Macron with elections looming.

Given all the political rhetoric and posturing today around nuclear confrontation. My take is that Putin has moved away from asking NATO for concessions and is now essentially warning NATO to keep its nose out.

Russia made a very big public play today by deploying MIG-31K’s armed with Kh-47M2 Kinzha missiles to Kaliningrad.

These Mach 10 missiles are essentially air- launched, nuclear capable, ballistic missiles. Their range means that France, Germany and the U.K. are all at risk.

If they’re launched there’s basically no way to stop them.

This isn’t Putin threatening Ukraine. This is Putin directly threatening NATO. It’s a big escalation and change of tact.

The US aren't confident that we will hold the Russians to strict account if sanctions are put in place, which tells a thousand tales.
To be honest, the whole NATO side is splitting apart at the seams as constitutent nations are all too busy playing to their domestic galleries.

All Russia has to do is sit tight and let their opposition fall apart. Perhaps move a few battalions around and so to get the Western hawks steaming from their ears whilst they enjoy their попкорн in Moscow.

Want change in Russia? Don't play the game Russia wants to play. Unfortunately any reset will happen only after Putin is gone.

Absolutely. He’s playing the game and European countries are panicking all over the place. Once again, the only people we can trust are English speaking nations…..
