According to research by the think tank RUSI, when Vladimir Putin began his invasion, he expected to take control of Ukraine within 10 days.

TBF it should be understood that "take control of Ukraine within 10 days" almost certainly did not mean "militarily defeat Ukraine within 10 days". The aim was almost certainly for the government to flee or fall and a pro-Russian regime take over in its place.

The initial invasion had all the signs of a shock-and-awe offensive on a very broad front but without any depth to the assault, intended to cause so much fear of an attack everywhere that serious fighting was not expected.

Once it became clear that failed because the Ukrainian government didn't collapse, and they didn't accept the peace proposal that would have left Ukraine with less than it has at the start (but more than it controls now), the Russians have probably been trying to formulate some sort of policy for defeating Ukraine ever since - albeit one that ties in their wider, long-term aims and ambitions.

NATO/USA are completely incapable of challenging Russia, at least in the state they are presently in.

If they could challenge them, Ukraine would have been admitted into NATO long ago.
