Isn't the received wisdom that they wont do anything other than get shot out of the sky and that they'll add nothing to the air defence of the front line Ukraine assault?

The Russians have pretty much kept their air force grounded during the last 18 months because of their vulnerability. Both Russia and Ukraine have sophisticated air defence systems and jets aren't going to determine the outcome of this war.

To put it simply, no. @Mutzo Nutzo is the man to talk to about this, yet a few points regarding the F-16s capability and the Russia air defence system.

First and foremost, the recent UAV attacks (these aren't small things by the way) would indicate the 'sophisticated' system isn't as reliable as people may think.

Now, it's likely the systems weren't designed specifically for this type of attack, but we can conclude that they are vulnerable to intrusions of some sorts.

The F-16 won't be used for that type of attack although its versatility (could be used for air-to-air combat, EW, STG attacks etc.) will improve their capability.

Its capability will also either maintain the status-quo (RA won't go up to meet it) or ensure that Ukraine has the ability to some extent take the fight to the Russians.

Yes aircraft alone won't determine the outcome of the war, but modern western aircraft will be a huge benefit to them taking the fight to the Russians.

Well it's all a bit moot now as the Ukrainians concede they wont get enough F-16s into this conflict.

But the last I looked at this the Ukrainian need was for more artillery, drones and tanks and better short range anti-aircraft systems to counter Russian attack helicopters which are having a field day.

The F-16’s will probably deployed initially in a wild-weasel (SEAD) role. Make the Ru AD systems go active and then mallet then with HARM’s.

They’re not going to go up against Ru SU-30/35’s in straight dogfights as they’d get wiped out.

Another possible role for them is anti-shipping as each F-16 can carry 2 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. This would be a massive concern for the Ru Black Sea fleet and effectively keep it bottled up in port.

The entire area is one huge EW battleground. It’s certainly not safe for either Ru or Uke air forces to be deployed effectively in an air superiority role.

Lessons to be learned by all major Western powers as the rules of warfare are now effectively being re-written.

This won't end in my lifetime unfortunately. Even if fighting ends, hatred and bitterness between them will last generations.

Up until the last 10 or so years Ukraine and Russia had a pretty good relationship with each other. Better than most other Eastern European countries anyway. What a mess.
