I'm sure he has backers. He (and they) don't move unless they think he has enough. Putin's problem, now, is finding the knives in the dark. Being former KGB, he has proven good at that before. That's probably what he's up to, at this moment.
Whether Putin wins or loses probably depends on whether or not he can stall long enough to solve his obvious problems close to home, and mount a coordinated response.

I’d say so. For months now Wagner has been beefing up its equipment and security at their main base in Southern Libya. They installed new Pantsir -S1 air defence systems at their airbase, so something has been brewing for a while.
Yeah, but he probably planned here for some time, preparing the terrain and making connections. He was shitting on Shoigu and Gerasimov for months now, trying to provoke them, he knew they gonna retaliate sooner or later.
Also outsiede few helicopter incidents his columns advancing so easily so far, without much resistance, i mean he took headquarters of Russian Southern Army Group in Rostov basically without firing a bullet
