I admire your faith or trust in the inherent goodness of people. It's not that I don't share much of the same but, at this moment in time, given the evidence we have I'm not at all sure Americans (or Europeans) are all that willing to sacrifice much for Ukraine.

There are tens of millions in this country more arsed about a trucker protest in Canada (Trudeau = tyrant) than an invasion of Ukraine (Putin = genius). Nary a negative word about Putin at CPAC. There are political candidates praising Putin for his defending "Christian values". Hack political "reporters" moaning about gas prices to the POTUS in the midst of this atrocity.

We are a good people but, at this point in time and in far too many cases, an unserious lot that is infected with ADD and a sense of entitlement no "other" is going to infringe upon. FFS, all over right-wing radio yesterday was the claim Putin is doing a better job "protecting" his borders that we are ours.

A lot of that is the people who I was on about though, using their media power to influence the rest into backing something that is indefensible otherwise.

I mean there isn’t a grassroots support of Russia, is there? It’s just the same talking head traitors again.

While I agree with the concerns and there's some important points to not be disregarded, Afghanistan and Europe / The Baltic States aren't one and the same.

The US is the biggest component of NATO in terms of troops, spending and intelligence, so their demise is not on their agenda. Russia ≠ Afghanistan too.

I know it's difficult because of what's happened now and in the past, but honestly they will be protected.
I hope you're right.

Can we stop the what about rubbish

Yes, the west, and our democracies aren’t perfect but compared to Russia we are 100% the good guys.

Again, yes, we have let this happen, turning a blind eye to Russian aggression in exchange for money, letting them influence our elections, but this has no gone way beyond that.

We all know the mistakes the west has made but some of this stuff in this thread is nonsense.

Ah, right. Not because there are two other large, bellicose powers constantly seeing what they can get away with in the world who are much less benign than the (admittedly not all that benign) US.

Why do the Baltic nations, for example, want to join NATO?

Same reason as above. They want that brand of "protection" and "free democracy" the empire sells.

Break em of a little o that democracy, give em coca cola for thier property.

If they’re not defended, NATO ceases to exists. That’s too big a price in itself.
But we keep saying UKR is not a member and so on. But when they pressed for membership we told them it's too risky.

So in the end, it's not bcs of technicality, NATO lacks the coordination to fight v Russia as of today, be it for a member or a non member.
