Saudi's application to join the SCO was accepted yesterday by the way.
I think a lot of people here (on this forum and in the West generally) need to stop lapping up the kool-aid offered by the media and look at what is actually being said and done in the rest of the world.
So China’s influence in the Middle East is growing. Why? Because China needs access to resources to fuel its own economy. That access needs to come from a stable region so as to avoid price and supply volatility.
As for Saudi Arabia they want more control over the money for their product and in order for this to happen they are happy for China to to get involved.
Thing is the skeleton in the cupboard is Iran. Which leads me to believe that SA was afraid that China’s ties with Iran (tech, defence co-op etc…) would leave SA isolated in the region and therefore they decided to join the party so that they could keep up with the Persians. Which ever way you cut it though Sunni and Shia don’t work together, never have and never will. It will only end in tears for one or both of them.
As for us poor westerners, we simply need to focus all of our efforts on renewables and Nuclear and cut our dependency entirely on fossil fuels.
