I’ll be honest I didn’t know the importance of the difference before the war. But I read up on it early on when everyone (understandably) started using Kyiv rather than Kiev. I know it’s not the same reason for the difference but it’s what lead me to itYeah it has a very big grammatical reason why it matters in reality.
