I doubt that last statement very much. They will held to answer in a extreme way. Putin only knows one thing "Strength" when he sees his bluff is called he will finally come to the conclusion his Empire building is over.
Funny how this psychopath is now being seen as someone who will actually reason this all out.

The United States condemns Russia’s fraudulent attempt today to annex sovereign Ukrainian territory. Russia is violating international law, trampling on the United Nations Charter, and showing its contempt for peaceful nations everywhere.

Make no mistake: these actions have no legitimacy. The United States will always honor Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders. We will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to regain control of its territory by strengthening its hand militarily and diplomatically, including through the $1.1 billion in additional security assistance the United States announced this week.

In response to Russia’s phony claims of annexation, the United States, together with our Allies and partners, are announcing new sanctions today. These sanctions will impose costs on individuals and entities — inside and outside of Russia — that provide political or economic support to illegal attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territory. We will rally the international community to both denounce these moves and to hold Russia accountable. We will continue to provide Ukraine with the equipment it needs to defend itself, undeterred by Russia’s brazen effort to redraw the borders of its neighbor. And I look forward to signing legislation from Congress that will provide an additional $12 billion to support Ukraine.

I urge all members of the international community to reject Russia’s illegal attempts at annexation and to stand with the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes.

So, Putin announces he now wants peace talks, and suddenly the nuclear threats and gasline explosions become clear. Annex territory, threaten nukes, and then go "But actually lets talk peace" in a desperate attempt to get Ukraine to agree to talks they otherwise would never agree to.

With the pipeline, the question had been what what benefit does Russia get out of blowing it up? The answer is, because they couldnt use it anyway, blow it up and blame it on someone else, and then say "Because they did that we can now do X Y Z". More pretend justification due to false flag ops fits Russia as well as can be. Both cases show Russias desperation, in that it does not believe it has the military capability to keep those portions of Ukraine for much longer, and they do not believe they have the financial and economical power to keep operations for much longer without any little stolen boost they can get.

You think the west will cause Nuclear War over Putin nuking a non NATO state?
There would definitely be a response to the use of a nuclear weapon. Wouldn't necessarily be all out nuclear war but certainly a massive conventional weapons attack. Even a small tactical warhead will have massive implications for hundreds of miles or more in all directions from fallout. Also your talking about massive casualties in the 100,000's.

Lease Lend?

By accepting Putin’s demands that 15% of their country is annexed to Russia?

Doubt that would be acceptable to most Ukrainians, especially those with family in those occupied territories.
This is one of the core problems. Zelenskyy cannot back down. He has too much political capital invested.

If we withdraw support and more or less compel a cease-fire as a consequence, he falls. He knows this, and he has been playing to Western media to bring popular pressure to bear, because his political survival depends upon continued Western support.

Putin also knows this, which is why he has been trying to end that support by steadily ratcheting up the risk level associated with continued support.

That's the thing, it's not a demand is it. For Russia now it's a matter of kicking out Ukrainian forces from their territory.

It might be wrong, but that's how it is now. If the war remains conventional, then perhaps you'd have a point, but that's not the cards on the table.

Zelenskiy getting popped by his own side might make an agreeable solution more palatable for everyone else.

It would sell Ukraine down the river but twas ever thus.

Putin isn't around forever, Lughansk and Donetsk independent of Ukraine and Russia wouldn't be the worst outcome for them. And another opportunity arises to bring Russia back into the fold.
