I’m assuming they are holdover names from the past including WW1 & 2 when the US had a much larger army and that some of the divisions kept their names (and therefore their history) rather than being rebranded.

@PhilM iirc you have done a lot of research about the World Wars, is that right?
It’s like how we’ve now got three divisions, which are the 1st, 3rd and 6th. As formations are made, their name is kept or mothballed overtime.

Units are attached and removed as requirement change, but the standing name with all the history and honours remain. The 101st for example came from WWI.

It was a regular infantry division (not sure if it ever went to the front), became a reserve division and then attributed to the airborne entity back in ‘42.

When I’m home from the pub and let the ale settle, I’ll try and explain more. Think about the moniker the ‘Desert Rats’ - they’ve been a division and now a brigade.

And the founder of Bellingcat is Elliot Higgins a prominent member of the Atlantic Council - far right think tank mate - sorry but an impartial investigate journalist he most certainly isn't.

Have I been hanging around Russians too long? Dunno mate, my wife of 9 years and my 8 and 4 year old are all Russian, it's why I'm invested in what's happening - and understanding why.
Whatever he is (senior fellow for European. Studies I think). Bellingcat are not (as you implied by posting that article), funded by U.K. and US intelligence services.

All the west wants is for Russia to play nice. The west is no threat to Russia. Sure, the Soviet Union broke up, peacefully, but so have tons of empires down the centuries.

A peaceful, prosperous Russia is good for everyone.

Mate here's the thing - if you know a country sees an action as provocative and a red line and you do they action anyway, because you feel they're wrong to think that way, that's insanity.

It doesn't matter one jot if other nations don't see what they're doing as creating an existential threat, if the country you're talking about does.

And especially so when it has for 20 years repeatedly stated it sees it that way and step by step it happens anyways.

Promise to Yeltsin not to expand NATO ignored and done regardless - further expansion of NATO to include former Soviet block countries, US backed uprisings in former USSR countries of pro Russian leaders and veiled promises about in the future admitting them to NATO, NATO - supposed to be an entirely defensive organisation bombing the crap out of a Pro Russian Serbia - with no UN mandate - the defacto NATO actions in Libya (NATO actions in all but name) and in a variety of other countries - showing NATO is now a vehicle for offensive actions and when wanted regime change.

None of this fosters the feeling that the west wishes for a strong Russia to join it's fold - the last Russian leader the west liked was a drunken puppet who let the country be raped in the interests of the West.

There's also that first line mate, the west wants Russia to play nice.

Play nice by it's rules effectively, no it's place in the world and keep to it, the sane mantra will be used about china and any other country outside of the anglosphere.

The UN a whilst ago got defacto replaced by the international world order phrase - basically meaning the world sits and takes it's instructions on what it's place is from the US.

Great if you're in the US not so great if you're from say Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Venezuela, Cuba etc

So, by extension, you reckon Russia invading Ukraine is a good thing? Or is as bad as the US doing bad things?

It's an existential threat mate, doesn't actually matter that the west think it isn't and that's the rub of the entire thing, when faced with an existential threat a leadership/military/country will do anything in it's capability to prevent it happening
Russia is mafia state run by a cartel that have chopped all of the countries resources that should be for the nations benefit to fill their personal coffers. They are at North Korea levels of propoganda in their attempts to control the populace and this invasion has cast a light over the levels of corruption that are a feature of the regimes government.

The poor Russian lads and families that are losing their kids are doing so to keep Vlad, the taxi driver, in the life of luxury that he has cornered for him and his oligarch mates.

Ukrainian sabotage troops are already in Severodonetsk and Lysychansk an fighting with the retreating units of the military forces of the Russian Federation.
the Russians yesterday removed protection from the Donetsk direction and sent reinforcements to the Kharkov direction and because of this they received a breakthrough along the eastern front line and completely crumbled.

a lot of good news today that no one expected, even the most ardent patriots
