It may not be original, but it's certainly accurate mate. You bemoan the horrors of ad hominem, but then you go on about "group think" or pointedly highlight the bedazzling wonders of "thinking for yourself" while lamenting the sorry state of discourse these days... as if none of these are things that whoever you're replying to has never encountered or even considered.

You definitely have an "above the herd" mentality.

And that's coming from someone who generally tries to address the points you've made, rather than call you names, only to be met with much of what I've listed above.

That 'above the herd' mentality has given rise to the alt right.

It's not new. It's a snake oil salesman's plea to would be human sheep in 1825's Dodge City, Kansas.

They think they've discovered the wheel, when, in fact, they are just replaying scenes from human history where the ignorant are easily swayed to accept the known and fear the unknown.

yeah...you do give it a good go, tho' even you aren't immune:

Then you're crazy

I don't think he'd get nearly as much condescension if he wasn't arguably the most condescending person I've ever encountered on the internet - and that is one HELL of a tough list to crack.

God you really are some sort of Breitbart-o-matic, aren’t you?

Good god you’re self righteous.

In those 4 quotes we've got 4 different negative qualities: insane, condescending, far-right & self-righteous. Whoever that person is who has those 4 attributes must be insufferable (I realise I am to some of you!).

To be fair I dish it out too. I'm not claiming to be above it all, I'm just claiming to recognise it. I'm just as guilty a lot of the time. That's the issue with modern debate: two opposing opinions clash to the point of belittling the other rather than coming together to form a compromise.

I guess we could all just try and chill a bit more, tho' Everton being crap probably doesn't always help our moods.

If you want to stop being seen as far-right, you should stop posting positively about far-right things.

Making false claims is also a regular feature in debate...you'll notice there's never a quote to back up the slanderous claim being made.

Sometimes in debate there's an unwritten rule about coherence coming from study. All sides are open to question and it isn't that much of an ask to look into differing resources for clarity of argument.
It's why I watch sky news, every angle they go with gives me the opportunity to rule it out. ;)

At least we can all agree that Everton are crap yet we love Everton. And hate it.

I am consoled by the fact that I am not Ralph Northam. Counting my blessings, as they are many.

Blues,

There's been a steady increase in reports from the Current Affairs forum during the past few weeks.

While it's against my instinct to have a moan about reports which are very valuable to help us moderate the forum, can I ask you all to revisit the pinned thread here;

https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/whats-this.94393/

... And carefully consider whether your report is rational.

Thanks.

Just bumping this.

If you report posts in this forum, and we find them trivial - chances are, we'll remove your access to this sub forum.

Read this post: https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/whats-this.94393/

And;

I've just revoked posting rights to 'Current Affairs' to a few.

We've always been very clear what this forum is all about;

https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/whats-this.94393/

... But the past week or so, a few have forgot.

Moderators - if people struggle with Current Affairs, just revoke their access. Your volunteered time is valued - don't waste it in here. You're on a hiding to nothing.
