The Oldies Thread

Proof if it were ever needed that I've never grown up!!!!
I've just finished mowing the lawn. Every time I start winding in the extension wire reel, I imagine myself as a David Niven or Jack Hawkins character in the Guns of Navarone or Bridge Over the River Kwai preparing to run a detonation wire to blow up the Huns or Japs.

Love it, can we still say 'Huns' and 'Jap's'?

…Guns of Navarone reminds me that the beautiful Gia Scala was born in Liverpool;

Yes, I was there 1955-57.
If I remember correctly you asked a few details about my grandad who served in Malaya when you did. You asked me ages ago and it slipped my mind completely until today.

My grandad passed in January and went to see my Nan today. We went through a load of old things and came across a few bits that might interest you.

Thought as much when I posted that

Its all about context lads. If, for example, Everton were being humped by a German team, and someone posted "I effin hate those huns", not good.

But using the terms that were commonplace in the films we all remember, in an affectionate memory of simpler times, in this thread, no worries.

In a similar vein, try reading a Biggles book and judge it by modern standards!

"What the!", Ginger ejaculated, is a personal fave.

Chocks Away was to be uttered if either of them was in trouble if ordered by captors to hoodwink them.

Cooperrman, many, many thanks for those. The two main beers were Anchor and Tiger. I preferred the Anchor. On the Southampton dockings I see the troopship Dunera. Was that the one your grandad was on? I too came back on the Dunera which took 42 days to reach Southampton due to the Suez crisis which closed the Suez canal. We had to go round the cape. Only consolation was a days shore leave in Cape Town.
Many thanks again and please pass my thanks and best wishes to your Nan.
