The Oldies Thread

Thank you for your kind words. I think I may be second oldest. There is a gent on here who served in Malaya (as I did) who is about a year older than me.
Well I just missed national service, deferred due to going into higher education.
I had pals who served in Malaya and also at Suez.
I'm à WW survivor, got bombed in Leeds in 1941. 4yo.

…that would be about the time I was born, 1956. I remember saying the beautiful Doris Day singing ‘Que Será’ was number 1 when I was born & I think you said that brought back memories of you being in Singapore.
I'm a comparative baby compared to a few regular contributers on here, seventy next birthday. I sometimes think us older guys are slowly becoming detached from the main body of the site, as demonstrated by what I describe as a brewing civil war surrounding the Everton dad thing.
The main thing though is that many of those that know me say that one day, I'll grow up.

You were unlucky to be bombed in Leeds as Leeds got off extremely lightly. Apparently, it was difficult to find for the Germans. I went through the blitz in Liverpool which was the most heavily bombed city after London. Slept in the Anderson shelter (in the back garden) every night for the 8 months of the blitz.

….my mother-in-law is 93 and lived through the Blitz in Kent Gardens in the city centre. She says the German bombers flew so low she can remember the silhouettes of the pilots. The kids going to school next morning would collect the shrapnel from the bombs.

Amazing eye witness recollection from those days, makes Covid seem very manageable.

It's good to see you embracing technology. Quite a lot in your group refuse to and are missing out, especially those that are generally by themselves. I understand the mind-set, to an extent, but it can be a help too with keeping mentally active.
I had a good start though. In 1967 I was promoted to Computer Manager and installed the firms first main frame computer. By the mid 1970's we had 9 Depots around the country 'on-line' to the central computer. Plus the fact that one of my son in law's is a computer whizzkid so helps out with ultra modern stuff.

Yes I suppose so. I'm told that the luftwaffe were after the royal ordnance tank factory in Hunslet that night.
Bloody poor aim as it was 2 miles from where I was living

I wanst there, but similar happened in Bristol. They were after the Rolls Royce factory, and the docks, but flattened the centre of town instead. Seeing what was rebuilt in its place, half wish they would have another crack.
