The Oldies Thread

Used to have cold toast wrapped in grease proof paper to eat in break time in junior school. Youngsters nowadays .... lol

….in our secondary school the big thing taking half a loaf with the inside taken out to the chippy & getting it filled with chips and curry. Those living around the school complained at the loaf filling on the streets.

Amazing that so many lads had this for lunch literally every day for years. I suppose playing so much football allowed us to eat what we wanted, wouldn’t happen these days.

I grabbed my greaseproof paper wrapped morning break snack and stuck it in Army Surplus Store haversack one morning and dashed off to school.
I was shocked to discover they had corned beef on them, but not as shocked as my dad who opened his butty box for his break on the 2-10 shift to find cold toast and marmalade.

We were never allowed morning break snacks, either that or we couldn't afford them.
In primary school we had those third of a pint bottles of milk.
Nice in the cooler months but like drinking yoghurt before we knew what it was in the summer term.
In secondary school you had ten minutes in the morning only. Most used it as a fag break though.

During the war, we didn't see a banana for years. At the end of the war, one of the lads in our class had an uncle who came back from somewhere in the east. He brought some bananas and the lad in our class brought a piece of banana about two inches long and wrapped in greaseproof paper. He was a kind heated lad and he gave everyone in the class one lick. Even though I hadn't had a banana for 5 or 6 years, I could still remember the taste.
