The Moyes influence on Everton.

Moyes wanted to keep Lescott, its almost like you have forgotten his performance in the Arsenal smashing.

Compare that with John Stones reaction to being told he had to stay.
So you are saying Lescott was the sole fault for the Arsenal drubbing, I remember there was 11 players responsible that day.
So are you also admitting RM is stronger than DM in standing up to the board, as it does appear that way.

Great thread.

All I'm going to add is, Roberto Martinez has the potential to take Everton to the next level. Moyes couldn't and would never have done it no matter how long he was in charge for.

Martinez gets 'it' aswell.

I think David Moyes did brilliantly at Everton up to possibly the last two years of his tenure.
I think he probably stayed two years too long and we all know that he would have left twelve months earlier than he did if he had been offered the Spurs job.

I think that David Moyes had realised that he had gone as far as he could at Everton and was concentrating on protecting his reputation.
The "knife to a gunfight " attitude was geared to show what a great job he was doing on limited funds while at the same time explaining away any poor results that we may have had.

RM has a different mentality (at the moment), he doesn't talk about the obstacles , he talks about the opportunities.
We may giggle at his super positive description of everything relating to Everton but that is the essential difference between the two managers.
One sees the glass half empty, the other sees it half full at the very least. Time may temper that optimism.

It is great to be supporting a club which has a positive atmosphere about it.
Yes, there will be defeats and yes there will be bad days as well, but there is a lot to be positive about and RM takes credit for most of that.

You can see the glass full of whatever you like. Unless it's full of million pound notes then Everton simply can't break into the top 4 on anything like a consistent basis.

He was what we needed at the right time but stayed four years more than he should have, and belittled us during that period then him his new position trying to buy our players.

He will be afforded a sound reception when he returns from time to time but great Everton managers win stuff and believe that Everton should be winning stuff, neither of which applied to him.

this.

for anyone to say moyes was completely poo is chatting out of their arse. we needed his freshness and enthusiasm when he joined. he really shook things up, got shut of gazza and ginola and the like, made big dunc captain, played more than one attacking player on the pitch ... jeez smith was dour. remember moyes in his tracksuit first game warming up the players? that was a real sign he was up for it.

he really did save us and performed wonders turning us into relegation fodder to a team challenging for europe each year (bar the 11th/17th)

then around 2010 onwards he went on the decline, our season was done by november and we had to get out of trouble before rolling to a top 8 finish latter half, 12/13 was his best start for a long, long time.

gave us our belief back, brought quality players to the club on a regular basis and instilled a strong, hardworking team spirit in the club.

but he wasnt without his faults, which a lot of his disciples can't see past. his tactical inedpitude at times, a lot of dross football, negativity both on the pitch and in the media, lack of trust in flair players, too many favourites (every manager has their favourites, but rarely are they as [Poor language removed] as osman, hibbert and neville) and a lack of plan B on the pitch. though from how we played a large chunk of 2010-12 im not sure there was much a plan A besides lump it to the forward (who was usually not a target man, like Saha), or give it to Baines and hope he creates goalscoring chances from left back ...

I keep hearing the net spend between the managers

A couple of points
RM wants to hold on to players as his belief is he is building something.
DM sold players so they could improve their own careers
Hence the difference in net spend

Also with the introduction of the TV windfall the last couple of years a 10ml player 5 years ago is now 30ml
So Lukaku was the equivalent of Yakubu

The net spend is not a valid argument as the finances in football have been turned upside down in the last few years

Martinez has been given funds.. Moyes wasn't.
Moyes only sold to better the squad, Martinez can just better the squad.

Don't underestimate the amount of difference the sky deal has made to our ability to buy players without selling..

Look DM is now history, let's move on with RM - I feel this is the season his signings have to push us to the level,of his first season to keep our star players, and build a very good team in the future, if he can win a cup then that's a bonus it's what the current fans deserve last trophy 1995
Let's hope this season we finish near or in the top 4 if we can play like we did on Sat!

We have moved on, but doesn't mean we can't discuss historical Everton matters, especially since they directly correlate with the current manager and how he is comparatively performing.

Both equally sincere and seemingly decent blokes in their own way
Both equally frustrating in their own way
Both equally Inflexible etc etc
Both etc etc
"
"
" fast forward............to
Both not Catterick, Kendall MkI, Clough, SAF or any other top manager.
Both restricted by finances
Both unlike to get us to the final level

On the good side;
Both not maureen or wenger or any of the other managerial bellwipes of which there are many.

could've been worse

7/10

we need the Goldilocks candidate

Not too much Moyes and not too much Martinez.

If and when Martinez jumps or is pushed, I'm picking Unsworth to get the job not Dunc

Moyes left Everton FC in a much better state than he found it, how many other managers we have had in the last 30 years can say that?

John Carey left famously sacked in a taxi -Everton in a very good state signings like Bobby Collins Roy Vernon Alex Young etc 5th was not good enough however the manager came in used the nucleus of that side, and won the championship, that's the style of management, football that is the difference success, over DM , and RM - DM era gone he did well , but imo became stale - RM looks so far and the Jury's out that he can hopefully turn us around into playing positive football one good season one average season did OK in the Europa with the small squad he had I feel his signings this year need to blossom keeping stones, and our better players is vital in this!
Another good season this year hopefully a good run or win a cup is what we can hope for imo!
