So in the USA - a completely different society and culture with different police.

Why do I get the feeling some WANT there to be a bigger race issue than there is currently in the UK all so that it validates the minority to cause destruction and trouble all so they can say "they had the right to"

Race relations in this country will be worse after the weekend - something completely against the aims of the BLM movement - maybe ask why.

Yes, because the far right have never caused any trouble over here.

You keep talking about this massive fight that’s going to happen between the EDL and the far left (which in itself is nonsense), so I take it you’ll have the same criticism for the EDL if they incite violence at the weekend.

"My own view on this is that hiding our history is not the route to enlightenment," Prof Richardson told the BBC.

"We need to understand this history and understand the context in which it was made and why it was that people believed then as they did," she said.

"This university has been around for 900 years. For 800 of those years the people who ran the university didn't think women were worthy of an education. Should we denounce those people?

"Personally, no - I think they were wrong, but they have to be judged by the context of their time," said Prof Richardson.

Amen.

I wouldn't say all of it tbh, he was a rising star in the admiralty fit for greater things before he made that folly. He was then shunned from the front line never to return if it hadn't been for WW2. As for character traits it was commonplace at that time so why would anyone highlight it?

If you compare his decision and his words about Bengali community during WW2 and Nazi Germany treatment of let's say Romany community (before final solution), you would be forgiven in believing they were from the same party. And considering our position seeking new trade deals, Churchill still inspires disgust in places such as India, and it's often mentioned in their politics it's time for India to make amends...

Gallipoli was a poor plan poorly executed and Churchill took the fall, voluntarily, for some frankly insane tactical decisions by his admirals. In penance he sent himself to the Western front where he fought on the line (not as a staff officer in a chateau) for 4 months. Imagine any politician doing that today...

Edit: That reads as if he bore no responsibility for the disaster that unfolded.. He did, of course.

And who reversed the ban on Jews immigrating into England? Why evil old Ollie Cromwell.

It's almost as if people are complex and have both good and bad features.
This whole affair to me simply highlights that when you figures of the past based on our sentiments and ethics, rather than there's, it will raise lots of issues.

Like her father, Elizabeth I waged a war on Catholicism and the legacy of that is evident today, so rightfully people could claim disgust at statues of her.

Should they be removed? There appears to be far less of a cry so I wonder whether it is an inconvenience or one form of oppression (still today) is less important.

There is a statue of Ghandi in Parliament Square and he made many remarks of a racial nature, but where is the clamour for this to be removed?

Understanding a person's actions in the context of their time is something that all historians should do.

I have no problem with do gooders but as is always the case they often tend to overstep the mark and start charging past common sense actions which turns alot of regular folk away.

Look we get it - you on the far left love radical ideas - but the majority doesn't- far left, far right has no place in UK society and you'll never win support by doing what those protests are now doing including the sudden purge of our historical monuments - something that does nothing to actually help tackle racism in this country just more a tick box exercise for the social warrior type on twitter to get likes and followers.

If the authoritarian mob decides to stop with its violence & actually fights for equality, better opportunities and an end to poverty let me know and I'll happily support them.

I’m not far left and many supporting BLM are not far left. It’s not that radical a position to be against symbols of racism and oppression.
You can keep up with your ill founded comments about twitter social warrior types but it doesn’t make the arguments less valid.

your comments in here don’t make it seem like you’d be supporting anyone whatever happened

Are you a centrist, neo liberal type?

I think the only thing that matters and is considered by the majority of the UK is that without Churchill we would surely have been a defeated nation - he was the right dog for the fight.

We all know the biggest symbols of murder/oppression/homophobia/racism/sexism is religion.

But that gets a pass at this moment.

One things for sure those defending the recent shenanigans will be of course attacking the EDL/football hooligan lot as being "trouble causers".

I have no sides in this conflict - two sets of thugs pitting off against one another.
