Just wondering whether the statue of Richard the Lionheart in Westminster shouldn't be given the heave ho. Not a huge fan of Islam, was he? Seem to recall he was one who followed the maxim, see Muslim; kill Muslim. There again, in those days Muslims were pretty busy accruing large numbers of slaves, so perhaps he was a freedom fighter.

Interesting one actually. Contemporary sources from the Third Crusade say that Saladin "lay" with him as he recovered from illness and injury.

Make of that what you will.

Without google who shot Franz Ferdinand and started WW1? His name is not quite forgotten to history but I'd wager not many could name the assassin. There is a statue to him in Belgrade where he is a hero, to people from other countries he's view as a terrorist who's actions caused the first World War. Just like Colson who was a hero to the people of Bristol and to people outside Bristol he did terrible things.

If only there was some other way of archiving and evidencing history other than statues.
There is but would people use them if there wasnt a reference point for them , say this colston fella in Bristol , why would anybody know of him outside Bristol if it wasnt for that statue, take it away so will the interest be taken away from of his actions.
How many people would have any interest in the life of say khufu?
Not many I bet.
Now say the great pyramid and peoples interest will be prodded.

Hero to the people of Bristol or is that merely a Victorian construct?

Totally a Victorian thing.

Banksy is more of a hero to Bristolians.

The ONLY reason people now know about him, is solely due to the fact that BLM lobbed it into the sea. Without that action he’d still be largely unknown outside that City, so the statue didn’t educate anyone, the actions of BLM did.

It's much harder while using the internet to come across educational information that you are not looking for, where as a tourist rambling around a city could come across a statue and with a plaque in place explaining the history of the person, and learn something they weren't expecting too.

I very much doubt they are just going to leave the plinths empty.

They can learn about someone or something else.

You can't really compare Gavrilo Princip to a slave trader though can you?

What is different? Plenty of pyamids were built/housed former slave masters who died many years before it was finished.

Why is one visual representation of slavery acceptable, but another isn't? Convenience?

The Colosseum. Built by 60,000+ Jewish slaves, killed 400,000+ more. That's fine, sell tickets.

What is different between a massive building that is a world heritage site and a random statue of some bloke?

Seriously?

Also if slaves were used to build something then we may as well keep the building up so that all that sweet slavery action didn't go to waste.

The only person who should be peeved about a statue being taken down (not destroyed, well one I suppose was drowned...) is the sculptor.

These are not Christ the Redeemer, the Statue of Liberty or the Motherland Calls we are talking about.

Get the army in - lunatics running the asylum with this inept government letting thugs and loons run amok smashing property and removing things in an undemocratic manner all whilst us law abiding majority are social distancing having made enormous sacrifices these past 3 months.

Running amok? Smashing property? One statue of a slave trader hit the drink lad.

Send in the Army though lol

How very left of centre.

Made this point earlier

Each monument/building etc has some significance to the city/town. And as mentioned by some black academics, it's up to the people of that city to make the decision what should happen to it if in discussion. N

However, I do agree that if there's no reference, there's no interest. History spans a long long time...not everyone knows everything. People need focal points to discuss.
