Current Affairs The Labour Party

Tossing aside the patriotic working class has been disastrous for Labour. I am not sure exactly how they can win them back.

Labour has firm founding principles, whereas the Conservatives have always been more of an evolutionary party, so change is not so difficult for them.
It's easy to be flexible when your only principle is money and power, it's harder to change when you actually believe in something

Difficult to see what Starmer can/will do to turn this around. Definitely a cabinet reshuffle coming but replacing somebody nobody has ever heard of with another person nobody has ever heard of is just a futile gesture.

The usless turd needs to bring the left on board (but wont), and spell out with policy what his LP looks like (more likely, and that will see a watering down of a leftish agenda and more clashes in the party).

The LP right now reflects him: characterless with zero identity.

What he should do is:

i) Ditch the experts that have led him to this, after a year. They'll bitch and moan to the papers but they will do that anyway when they fail again.
ii) Go through the party and focus everything local - from identifying the best local candidates, to empowering CLPs, to getting him and the rest of the leadershio to take genuine looks at what the issues are for people. That way Labour will get better candidates, better policies and a better network when it comes to the election.
iii) when he says he will start listening, actually listen to people

The answer isn’t going back to the left of the Corbyn era, but it isn’t gutting the party of the left either.

Labour can be an electable party that places itself to the centre whilst running on popular leftist policies.

Nobody seems to realise this and whilst there’s continuing infighting from both sides things will just get worse.

Two quite simple things he could do, which would resonate with millions, post pandemic.

#1. Say he would ring fence the entire covid spend, remove it from the Govt accounts, and pay it back over decades, to allow future administrations to function in a more normal way.

#2. Say he would instruct HMRC to not pile into the recipients of the self employed support scheme, tax notwithstanding, to prove they should have had it. The questions they asked were so ambiguous to qualify, means they are equally as easy to disprove.

You are going to get called far left as soon as you come up with any policies that would change people's lives for the better. Just ignore it and persuade people that you are right. Thatcher didn't transform the country by caring about what anyone thought of her.
