The Gana/Gomes partnership

Add either Ndombele or Rabiot into the mix and we have the best midfield 3 in the league.

Ndombele for sale in january and Rabiot is a free in summer.

Brands tells them the project they will be impressed.

Ndombele would be a massive coup, rabiot is going to barcelona...

Im not sure about 'best midfield 3' but Ndombele and Gomes would certainly be 2 of the best.

Gana is needed. We cannot win the ball back in the middle of the field without him. I understand when playing the Newcastles of the world that it would be good to have more options. Mix in an Ndombele or Doucoure and it would help. But not at the expense of a CF. I also think RB is now a bigger problem as well.

That is pure scaremongering Nonesense.

...neither Gueye or Gomes will ever provide goals. That in itself isn’t a disaster, the Reid/Bracewell partnership was not prolific but goals were aplenty in the mid-80s, Sheedy, Steven, Heath, Sharp, Gray and Mountfield were capable of hitting double figures.

The problem with this team is we are largely reliant on just two players for goals. If we accommodate a Gueye/Gomes partnership we will struggle if others don’t chip in with their quota.

You need in this type of system about 40-45 goals from your starting front four, be that 10-12 each, 20,10,10,, 5, or 30, 5,5,5 etc.

Right now ours get kinda the figures which would be fine if we had someone scoring the way a peak Lukaku was for us, but we don't. So either need to bring in that prolific a player, or ensure that the front four as a unit have more goals in them, right now Richarlison could be in that 15+ range, siggy - 10 or so, Walcott 5?, Bernard 2-3?

Replace Walcott with someone else who can add similar to Richarlison, then your on tarvet.

Forward options off the bench then need to chip in with 10 or do, defenders combined over a season similar, and similar from central midfield.

Benchmark should be aiming around the 75+ goals mark.

Need a back up in this window someone who can play alongside either. Gueye broke down as there was no viable back up. We don't want it happening again later in the season or worse still happening to Gomes. It will also help to have someone up to speed if Gomes doesn't join permanently for whatever reason.

Not really. The way we currently play, his energy and pressing and tackling is key to us winning it back.

It showed the other day, albeit against an excellent team.

Davies could come in over Xmas next to Gomes and do really well. I hope he does. But it doesn't mean Gana wouldn't be missed or that Davies would bring what Gana does. And if Gomes is having to do that job - which he hasn't got the pace for - then it's a waste of what he's good at.

Need to look to upgrade Gana if I'm being totally honest. Need a big, commanding presence next to Gomes.

Which is fine. ON the ball, Doucoure is definitely an upgrade, and you're right that his strength/power is an asset.

Off the ball, we'd lose something. But, a player like Doucoure - or an Ndombele or that type - would at least mean the drop off isn't too big.

But Gana is incredibly undervalued by far too many, which is mental considering when he's not in the side we literally have to change the way we play.

It we bring Davies in for Gueye it diminishes both roles. Gueye is a better 6 than Gomes and Gomes is a better 8 than Davies. I would much rather see Schneiderlin or McCarthy come in then Gomes can be left as he is and only the 6 diminishes. I know Schneiderlin was awful last season but that was because he snd Gueye wanted to do the same role. Just like Gueye improved alongside Gomes I believe Schneiderlin would.

I just don't think Schneiderlin has the pace or mobility or energy to pair with Gomes though. Davies does, at least, have the energy to get about. Against crap sides I see no issue starting Davies. Maybe it could work though.

If Gana has to drop out and we want as much as a similar replacement as possible, then I'd say McCarthy, but it's his fitness that's the issue. And Davies does bring a bit more impetus to the midfield.

I would prefer McCarthy as well but the fact he hasn't even been on the bench and he also hasn't played for the 23s apart from that one game makes me worry about his fitness.
