ps I bumped this thread due to the misplaced optimism of people thinking Neville was being phased out nearly three years ago.

I tell you what i want for Phil Neville, i want him to be fit enough to come on for a 5 minute cameo once we are 2 or 3 up against West Ham.
All players deteriorate, so its not Pips fault he is no longer good enough, but he has been a great Ambassador, not only to his profession but for Everton Football club. Good luck for the future Pip.

Just to be clear, I don't blame Neville at all, it's not his fault he's getting older. I think our manager needs to be more pro-active in recognising when a player is over his peak.

Moyes has spent literally thousands of hours on the training pitch with Neville, and didn't cotton on to the fact that he was so past it he wasn't going to finish the season. I think Moyes is great at snapping up bargains when buying players, but I think he costs us millions in wages and missed fees by not selling/ "retiring" players at the most opportune moment. I'm not knocking Neville as a player (actually, who am I kidding, I am really, especially for the last few years) but I think the value for money that we get from some of the old guard is not worth it. Loads of our players have stayed on long past their best, and they tend to be on higher wages.

Yeah, it does feel churlish to complain about moyes getting value for money because he does better than pretty much every manager in the league.

But we really do struggle to sell when a player's peaked. Yak and Saha being the biggest examples but also neville, cahill, yobo etc are all pllayers we held onto too long and you're right it costs us money.

Didn't we get like a 8 million pound bid for Saha?

Yeah, Fenerbache or something wasn't it? Easy to say in hindsight though, up until that point he was literally the only person scoring for us that season.

Sure but the coaching staff should sell players where we're all thinking "wow that guy had a lot left to give, terrible decision." and then they get proved right.

They should know when a player is about to crash, and they don't seem to. Wenger and ferguson are very good at it.

Isn't it more about the influence on the next Generation of Superstars in our Superstar Stable of Superstars?
