Unfortunately the die was cast in this respect the moment Angela Rayner got away with her use of hateful language towards Tories a week or so back. Once the BBC, Channel 4, the Guardian and so forth all gleefully ran the story of what she said, they cleverly exerted all the pressure necessary to make sure that Starmer was forced to let it go unpunished. Thus it becomes normalised, and look where we are now.

Utter nonsense.

Behave, the "die was cast" a long, long time before that.

.... as of course the history of the last 21 years in British politics shows.
I don't think the far Left has been openly, vocally, unreasonably hateful for the last twenty-one years. Not in any appreciable number, at least. Although perhaps there has not been an increase in number over the last two decades, perhaps it's just that modern technology and social media means that their message is more easily broadcast now.

Nevertheless, Rayner is now a figurehead for those few on the Left who just want to hate instead of engage in practical politics.

No she hasn't, no more than James Gray has for the same kind of tossers on the right.
The whole episode is a storm in a teacup.

Or, it's emboldened other people to openly express their hatred for anyone who doesn't agree with their politics and broadcast that hatred in the form of grossly offensive posts on internet forums hours after a 69-year old man was violently murdered in broad daylight in his workplace.

Take a long, hard think about which side of this particular line you choose to stand. For instance, I don't believe that Angela Rayner is fit to be an MP and I disagree fundamentally with the majority of her political views BUT if I was in her constituency surgery when someone tried to pull a knife on her I don't think I'd stand to one side and say "Hmmmm. I'll stay out of this one."

Trying to score some points from someones death when the initial reports seem to suggest terrorism.

You're onto a winner here..

Probably hasn't though, has it? We both know those people would've done that regardless of anything Angela Rayner said or did a couple for weeks ago, and that you're clutching at straws here. Give over.

No, you've missed my point.

I'm simply saying that people like @Paris have been emboldened by Rayner to make the type of comments they have today in response to the murder of a Tory MP. My comments were not about the person who allegedly committed the murder, nor their possible motivations.

You now appear to be denying the entire concept of hate speech. Something tells me we are unlikely to find common ground on any discussion that doesn't involve the mighty Everton...

Not really. I wasn't comfortable with what Angela Rayner said, as I posted on here at the time. I just think you're reaching a bit, and trying to make a connection that isn't really there. Shes not a focal point for anything. Enjoy the rest of your evening, I'm going to bed.

They've absolutely not been. Were you not around when Thatcher died?

It would - just the logistics of it in terms of staff, training, intelligence, effectiveness of the search regimen and so on for all 650+ MPs is massive.

Then you’ve got the not insurmountable hurdle of doing it to thousands of people who might well already be complaining about state malpractice / intrusion / harassment / torture (whether that is here or abroad). Are people going to accept the level of search that would be required to clear someone of having a weapon in order to see their MP?

People submit to similar to go see a gig or get on a plane. It's the world we live in; MP surgeries the way they exist now are sadly an anachronism.
