I'm sorry that a lot of people find it difficult to contemplate but this man and his ilk voted with the intention of making life for the LGBT+ community (of which I'm a part), as well as mothers with unexpected pregnancies even more difficult. His vote would have had a direct, detrimental impact on our lives if his vote won, then you add his views on women coming out in the aftermath of the accusations against Harvey Weinstein in 2017 and his views on voting Remain.
I'm not happy he died but am I not sad.
Looking at Amess’s voting record I dont see him as someone I would have much time for. Many of his views, shown from what he voted for, seem opposite of mine and some of them I could not imagine anyone with an ounce good conscience voting for.
However, seen many posts on social media or on the news telling of genuine acts of kindness he had shown, and things that speak to him being an honest, conscientious, hard working local MP. All that says he was a genuinely good person. With elements of politics that i recognize as good.
Indeed Amess was very much into animal rights and successfully got an act passed which banned cruel tethering of animals. Amess was also one of the few Conservative MPs that voted to ban fox hunting. He also brought about the warm homes and energy act which helped reduce some fuel poverty.
And he successfully campaigned to have a statue in honour of Raoul Wallenberg who died saving thousands of Jews in Nazi occupied Hungary.
It is fairly simple, but it’s something many seem to have forgotten. People of good character may hold views that we fundamentally disagree with. And the if they act with good character, the onus is on you or I to respect this difference.
However, as said earlier this was very much the lesson Jo Cox death gave us and yet here we are again...
