How do food banks actually work? Like what's to stop people turning up for free food who can afford it?

You "join" and are assessed, then given a number of vouchers to use.

Like most things Covid wise mind, I am sure they would have streamlined systems though. Like my parents started receiving food parcels, via the council, but using data the food banks might have had as well. I just took them to the collection point at Sainsburys.

The Shame of this government hangs with the gullible masses who voted them in... just remember that.

I voted conservative but would have supported FSM. People who have voted Labour in the past, probably would not have voted for the invasion of Iraq, were they part of the gullible masses ?.....

Different organisations have different rules. Some won’t provide without a referral from a charity or advice agency. Others you can contact direct. Some food banks will have repeat clients that they are aware of their circumstances. Some will just get sick of people and refuse them after a while.
For sure the system is abused but that shouldn’t be the main conversation here. They shouldn’t exist to the extent that they do and they’ve now basically become a crucial safety net. They’ll be around to generations and are the direct result of benefit cuts.
Part of my job is to make referrals. I’ve had clients break down in tears when I’ve suggested getting a food parcel to them as after checking their finances they basically can’t afford to live. It’s a grim world.

Every system in the world is abused by a small minority. Even if somebody who was on mega bucks turned up for free food and managed to get it, then that says more about them as a person. The people who genuinely need these services should never be punished for the few.

Notice a pattern.

Maggie the witch takes away kids milk

Boris won't put up money to give kids free meals during the holidays in a pandemic

Tories never change

Was listening to Radio 2 earlier, can't remember the name of the programme, but some of the callers in, christ. Fuming at the possibility of kids getting fed. Apparently its up to parents to make the right lifestyle choices. Well, yes, of course, but on the other hand, all you are doing is punishing a kid with an idiot parent in such instances. Also seem to forget there's a lot of people going to be out of work and struggling soon. One less meal to worry about can make a huge difference to the stress levels of a struggling family. Some proper mean spirited folk out there.

Indeed.

I got into another Facebook debate about this with another friend of mine. Some people just can't seem to grasp that we're all one illness or another unfortunate event away from being destitute.

Thankfully karma intervened and she walked into a lamppost.

Just had to come off Twitter as I was going down a hole that was just depressing me, reading comments from 'conservatives' that are quite happy to see a child starve because their parent received 'genurous' benefits

It's a repulsive and disgusting attitude to the vulnerable (children) in this country and I'm ashamed I share a country with these rats

Amazing what scum like Ben Bradley are prepared to say in public.

Imagine what they're like down the pub after a few gins.

I’m swerving this mate, and have never posted in this thread before I believe.
But as you tagged me in, it was a PS4 the customer wanted to buy using the food voucher codes. This wasn’t a one off either.
On the regular you get people wanting to buy alcohol etc with them etc and it’s always a confrontation that you just can’t be arsed with.
I’m sure most people use the vouchers responsibly and feed their kids and probably themselves with them.
I’ve been on the bones of my arse before, proper skint, and you will do whatever it takes to get by.
It’s the price you pay. People abusing the system is the price you pay to ensure that the people he really need it, get the help they need.

It’s the cost of being a first world country.
