A good mate of mine completed his doctorate based at that plant (Swansea Uni were the awardee, but it was an industrial collaboration) so he knows it and the area really well. It'll hammer Port Talbot and Neath, as well as other areas in South Wales. A region already devastated by de-industrialisation.It’s a shambles tbh. Build the replacement plant first before contemplating closing Port Talbot. 3,000+ jobs lost is absolutely massive for that area and the current plan puts the onus back onto imports. Now supposedly in the name of going green, manufacturers will still be making steel and then shipping it to the U.K. This net zero will drive the country into bankruptcy…
Oh, and Macron, Germany, Civil Servants and the EU……
The north is full of towns like this. Don’t think there is an easy solution either. In times gone by once the main industry in an area ceased, then people could simply move. Not so easy now and you end up with utter sink hole towns. Any area that is heavily reliant on one industry will have this happen to them at some point and any possible solutions would involve some creative thinking and a tonne of cash.A good mate of mine completed his doctorate based at that plant (Swansea Uni were the awardee, but it was an industrial collaboration) so he knows it and the area really well. The electric arc furnaces will mean some jobs but it's quite a shock to the area.
The other thing I think might be worth considering is how seriously the UK should be taking warnings from NATO and actions by the likes of Sweden that a war capacity is needed if it all kicks off against Russia. Might be useful to be able to produce steel from scratch...
A savage indictment on 40 years of politics and politicians of all stripes in the UK.The north is full of towns like this. Don’t think there is an easy solution either. I honestly don’t know what could be done apart from flattening places and starting again from scratch.A savage indictment on 40 years of politics and politicians of all stripes in the UK.
40 years.
Blair's Labour tried to reposition the UK as a 'Knowledge' and service economy, but it's not really regenerated anywhere equally. Just created clusters where you probably expect clusters- big cities and that isn't even. Hence we ended up with Johnson's vague levelling up crap.I honestly don’t know what could be done apart from flattening places and starting again from scratch.
The problem a lot of mining towns have, was there was a sense of pride amongst the people that worked there as it was so entrenched in the towns identity. (Even though they were extremely dangerous and hazardous jobs) Once that goes these places become utter magnets for the right as people all to easily take the racist route when looking to blame someone.
