Out of interest, why is that important? We don't produce more than half of the food we eat either but that doesn't seem to be an issue.
There's only so many other manufacturers, and some are tied to 'interesting' regimes. Whereas a lot of countries that don't produce steel do produce foodstuffs. Also, if there was an embargo for some reason, there's always the tried and tested 'dig for victory' to make britain self sustaining in terms of basic rations. It's going to take an awful lot of digging to strike gold, or steel in this case. There's also the standards of steel produced, masses of the stuff and get it out of the door, or stuff with a bit more structural quality. I want my high rise buildings and bridges made with the quality stuff if that's an option.

There are still steelworks in skunthorpe and teeside, but I'm struggling to find production numbers. redcar is gone and port talbot is winding down. Will the furnaces be mothballed or will the site be sold to developers and another huge estate banged up with no industry around to keep it.

Who out of India, the EU, Japan, and the US don't we think we could rely on to sub out the 6.1 million tonnes we produce domestically? The reality is that we make very few of the materials required to fuel the modern world. The batteries that form such a big part of our net zero, for instance, would be completely impossible without raw material from DRC, Indonesia et al. The last time I looked, they're also "interesting". Indeed, Indonesia is currently restricting the export of zinc and other materials, which one assumes would make them even more "interesting".

who is the west at war with this week, and which ships fancy a journey through the red sea bringing us steel? at times of surplus it is very easy to cherry pick figures, but things change very quickly, and could a new us president apply tariffs like he has before? I did also mention quality, and we've been over this previous...
Almost to the day...

I wouldn't rely on a Modi-led India or a Trump-led USA.
