Sharing this in this thread, but could equally go in the Labour one...

'kin el. All we're doing is storing up problems long term. I can't imagine being a kid in a poor family in this era. It wasn't amazing growing up on benefits in the the 80s and 90s, but at least we could afford food and heating.

Unfortunately people on benefits get victimised and pictured as villians.

Remember a poll done a good few years back and the results were surprising, the level of fraud was a small fraction of what people actually thought.

The right wing boomer solution to all this is to stop buying coffee, seems a tad reductionist to me.

It's how it's publicised, supposed benefits cheating is big news, grifting which is much worse and costs the Country as a whole a lot more is not.

Beggars beleieve why Tory Government spunked hundreds of millions of our money supposedly not allowing this shutdown and no operation to happen. Those in India who I guess will benefit from this will be very happy... Much like those agricultural trade deals with Australia and New Zealand, we are being laughed at.

Steel is a fundemental material for making and building things.
Surely it is more important for a country to protect and control the ssupply of such an important material.
The so called gaming industry does may pull in loads of money but does not provide the basics for construction, railway transport and vehicles.
Only a traitor would put us in this position with such important infrastructure material such as steel.

Now supposedly in the name of going green, manufacturers will still be making steel and then shipping it to the U.K. This net zero will drive the country into bankruptcy…
You are thick as two short planks. Net Zero specifically states we seamlessly transfer to going green between now and 2050.

I don't know the answer so it's not a leading question, but how much steel does the UK put to use per year, and what percentage of that usage is from the domestic sector?

We are again active in the Middle East be it playing bumper boats. Also supplying Ukraine with arms with much fanfare from Tories, this warfare normally made of steel, but who knows what Tory ministries get sold down the pub these days, be safer purchasing something off Temu or Aliexpress if managing Digital seamless post Brexit borders was anything to go by, so be very worried.
So in layman terms steel and being self sufficient is pretty important in a growing unstable world.

I'm not sure how that answers my question?

Then ask an expert like Kemi Badenoch im sure she will answer in a much more technical and coherent manner.
It wasn't a trick question :) Just wondered, given how the industry is spoken about as hugely strategic, a) how big steel consumption is in the UK, b) how much of that is provided for domestically, and c) where the rest comes from.

It feels these are important, as the plant is clearly not able to sustain itself organically, which given the supposed strategic importance of the sector does suggest either the sector isn't as big as we're portraying, or the plant itself can't compete with foreign rivals.
