What an absolutely daft argument. On that basis we could say that the Morning Star is a figurehead of the establishment. The political centre is represented in other countries which shows that it does in fact, exist, just because there are no mainstream parties that actually fit that definition within our own system doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Parties might claim they are the centre ground but by whose definition other than their own?

Can you provide me with a definition for what the centre ground is? Does it mean pro or anti immigration? Is it privatising the NHS? Is it declaring illegal wars in Iraq?

Parties are only ever recognised as centre ground when they actually prove it with their policies

I still think it´s impossible to define what the centre ground actually is. You can claim to occupy that space but it´s just an idea in your mind. What I consider to the be centre ground is likely to be completely different to what someone like Tony Blair does.

If you take the average person through the majority of the policies one by one they tend to support them . If you list them in the daily mail under a headline about how hamas supporting corbyn wants to nationalise your cocoa or whatever then less so .
Probably right, but then when they get to the polling booth they seem to change their mind. Happens time after time, the reason being that the 'undecided voter' tends to go for the 'safety first' option when push comes to shove. These are the people Corbyn needs to win over, not you or me or most people on here who clearly support him.

To be fair 40% at the last election was some achievement given Corbyn's personal rating. It's all to play for next time around. You could flip a coin I think.

It's a great question and to be fair I think you could write a doctorate on it, while still not having a finite answer for what the middle ground actually is.

The reason being is that it's based on the centre of a spectrum, but the start and end points are not specifically defined so it's difficult to find the centre of it.

For me, the term centre-party links to 'moderate' views (of either the left or right of centre) but also inherently 'flexible' - can go either way. But that isn't scientific!

A moderate party in say, a Balkan country, isn't going to be the same as a centre party in a more Westernised democracy: horses for courses you may say.

Corbyn stayed on when his vote was vastly against him. Nobody batted an eyelid about that.

You can do that when you are Leader of the Opposition though; no one expects you to win votes in the Commons. If he had been PM when they did that he would not have been PM the morning afterwards.

They don’t though; they get their policies and then get as many media, commentators and “respected” people to say how sensible they are. Just look at how often they use the word “fair” about Government spending, or how ludicrous some of Corbyns policies are portrayed even though they were among Thatchers own policies.

Then you get things like vox pops on the BBC where (to use last nights example) they ask random members of Mays constituency party to say how much they like her, and present that to the public as news.

The end result is that the voter who CBA to get their own politics ends up repeating what they’ve been told; that what the Government wants is a compromise, that the PM is working hard, that everyone who opposes her is an extremist - just as we were told that about Cameron, and Blair, and Maggie herself back in days of yore.

Is it any wonder we end up with “centrism” that somehow results in the establishment of a professional political class at a time when the profession is held in utter contempt, increased taxation, increased spending *and* cuts to services for most people as well as increased military commitments whilst cutting military spending?

When the Tories nick Labour policies, they magically become sensible.

Any reason why @peteblue isn't posting lately?
