That is always the idea, but the problem is (as Blair found) that people no longer have a reason to believe a PM who has said they are going - not with promises of promotion, or threats of deselection, or praise of other kinds.

Spot on , It was exactly Blair who I was thinking off when I posted that .

Edit - bbc reporting having been pushed on the dates she’s now clarified she will not fight another election .

Has to matter on some level, you don't sell your car or house without thinking what you are going to replace it with first.

But this vote has largely been bought about by the lunatic fringe of the Tories, who dont care about anything other than leaving the EU. How, they care not.

The wider party have concerns that as a campaigner, she is limited. Hence, I think, that she has assured them she will not be around for the next GE. Seems a sound, or at least understandable, course of action that she has taken.

We all knew after the last election that she wouldn't get to fight another, so I can't see that being the biggest surprise to them.

Of course to trigger the vote we have at least 48 snarling couldn't care less Tories. I just doubt there will be another 100+ on top of that who feel the same.

That is what Ministers went around saying, and the ERG do have form for idiotic "solutions" - but they are not wrong to oppose this deal. It really is as bad as they are saying it is.

Aye, the deal aint great as it stands. I posted in the EU thread that despite what the EU say, the final one might well have something in it to appease the doubts re the backstop.

Looks like she may survive even comfortably. Like most on here I wanted a tight result , I suppose maybe a even a razor think May win , which might have done the most damage but if it goes the way it’s looks I might have to try and take some minor satisfaction from the potential humiliation for JRM and Johnson’s wasted haircut .

That is the thing though - the reasons for the backstops existence will still exist when it comes to discussing a trade deal, unless Ireland leaves the EU and rejoins the UK. It is profoundly dishonest of ministers and pro-May Tory pundits to claim that it will just go away, just as its profoundly dishonest to suggest we will have control of our fish stocks.
