The Budget

More misery dished out today no doubt for those most in need.

These conservatives are really sorting out the finances of this country though surely, all these cuts we've endured, it can't have been for nothing can it?

2010 when they came to power we were 1 trillion in debt, 5 years of cuts later we owe 1.56 trillion, Osborne has borrowed more in 3 years than Labour did in 13.

The hoodwinking of the population by this lot is the best I've ever seen in my lifetime, it's staggering when you look at it.
That surprises me because the Tories always insist that it is easy running the economy when Labour are in power.

With regards to the Sugar Tax, they should ban sugar in fizzy drinks full stop.

There is no need to buy the standard types when most have a diet version, I've been buying only diet coke and lemonade and such for 10 years, never buy the standard stuff.

The taste of most diet drinks is so good now they should be the only option, particularly when giving to children.

A budget that gives more to those who don't need it by taking more from those that do....

Virtually every budget I can recall had this at its very core.

As if the ISA's thing won't be abused by the wealthy though. Got money to spare and the Tories throw more at you. Live on the breadline and they'll take it away.

It doesn't really concern me that wealthy people will try and abuse it, mainly because to a wealthy person it wouldn't be worth the time and effort because it'd be such a small return for them - however for people on low wages who are actually trying to save for a house/wedding/child it will actually be of some help.

It's a complete waste of time anyway, by the time it comes in (2018 IIRC) all the soft drinks companies will have had time to revamp their products with less sugar, they're in the process already, and it won't raise even nearly what the div has projected.

Gideon can throw out whatever gimmicks he wants today, the headline is "Borrowing up, growth down", however they try to spin it.

I don't think the aim is to really raise money, more to influence peoples behaviour - which I'm totally against.

As for headlines, it's a budget, I don't think there's been a budget since the late 19th century that hasn't been 90% spin and 10% economics.

They had been talking about this sugar tax for yonks, and were always hesitant about implementing it (think a lot of the Tory back benchers were against it) they knew it would be a headline grabber, and would be on all the front pages, Jamie Oliver, and the other campaigners doing interviews, so as you say "its pretty clever"
Sugar tax then freezes duty on cider which is full of sugar, or white wine full of sugar a ahold turns to sugar yet the cheapest cider is potent with sugar levels to the pancreas when broken down!

Normal Coke > Diet Coke

It's a good return for those who can find £4k/year to put aside. An option which those who really need the assistance can't afford. Unfortunately, many of those who really need it won't have rich relatives who can 'lend' them the money either.

It isn't really either/or - it's a policy that will help people save money that costs relatively little.

Sugar tax paying for sport in primary schools....Where they're banning every contact sport...And that's if they've got more than the playground to play the sport in, seeing as their playing fields are being sold off....

20 years from now we'll rule the planet at hungry hungry hippos...:dodgy:

Until the poorest and most vulnerable in society are adequately provided for, that relatively little is going to the wrong place. There are huge issues which are not being addressed re: the cost of living, a low wage economy, jobs, growth etc. But hey, bung a few folk and they won't see the real problems.

Nevermind the plebs, they're happy enough with a pat on the head & being told they're HARDworking...

Unlike them on the dole...Or them disabled folks. :dodgy:

They're all valid points, but you're going on about this policy as if it's exclusive to billionaires. It's something to help people save money with the promise of a 'top up' from the government - hardly draconian.
