Can GOT members buy shares for reasonable prices during the months you're away?

With respect I don't think it is an over-simplification for politicians once in a while to show leadership on certain issues.

A move to ban the right to hold a gun is in my mind analogous with the start of the movement to ban slavery - it's hugely unpopular to begin with but it has to be done because it is the right and sensible thing to do.

It will take a period of adjustment and won't solve problems overnight but in 20 or 30 years there'll be a different mindset and acceptance of it.

But it takes leadership to start it.

Anyway, apologies for entering into a US political minefield, I'll stop now.

It is why this election is so important. Nothing will happen unless there is a left leaning Supreme Court. Any action Obama could have taken over guns would have been reversed in a heartbeat. If, however, Hilary gets in then there will be a much more liberal Supreme Court in 8 years time and I think there will be genuine action against the gun lobby, especially as it Jean issue Hilary has campaigned very strongly on.

If the republicans get in then there isn't a hope in hell of any action on guns in the next 30 years as the Supreme Court will just be filled with a series of Scalias

No political expert myself, but seems if laws need changing it's not the responsibility of SCOTUS (yes, I wrote SCOTUS). Their role is to determine the applicability of the laws which exist. It's up to the other two branches to determine the forward path of the US.

I imagine the fact that the Supreme Court would knock him back is the only reason Obama hasn't gone down the executive action route on gun control like he has with everything else.

I would guess he fears the NRA more than them. He didn't seem to speak much on guns/violence until after Sandy Hook, but I don't think he's ever viewed this as something he could cure during his 8 years.

Great, that's perverting the course of justice then. We'll add that into the sentence for illegal firearms.
You'll need a lot of prisons to put them in. That is if they choose to be taken alive as lots think a gun ban is going to lead to FEMA camps.

Given that a lot of the argument seems to be around self-defence, it often baffles me just why none of these armed rampages are ever halted by a member of the public rather than a professional law enforcement team. I've read statistics suggesting that a gun held at home for self defence is more likely to be used against the home-owner by a criminal than it is to be used by the home-owner against a criminal.

I'm just not sure quite where the idea that owning a gun is a good means of defending oneself comes from.

It is something in the psyche of many Americans...rugged individualism, but something more than defending yourself which I can't put into words, but maybe a friend did.

My friend and I are ideologically polar opposites in almost every way, but I could not have a better friend. He is a generous, unassuming, quite shy and reserved guy....the sweetest man you could ever meet. I am hesitant to post this as he will surely be ripped to shreds, but will because it lends insight into what many gun owners in the US feel. Please don't make it about him personally as he's not here to defend his thoughts.

"I stand behind you in line at the store with a smile on my face and a gun under my shirt and you are none the wiser, yet you are safer for having me next to you. I won't shoot you. My gun won't pull it's own trigger. It is securely holstered with the trigger covered. It can't just go off. However, rest assured that if a lunatic walks into the grocery store and pulls out a rifle, I will draw my pistol and protect myself and my family and therefore protect you and your family. I may get shot before I can pull the trigger...but, I won't die in a helpless blubbering heap on the floor begging for my life or my child's life. No, if I die it will be in a pile of spent shell casings. I won't be that victim. I choose not to be. As for you, I don't ask you to carry a gun. If you are not comfortable, then please don't. But I would like to keep my right to choose to not be a helpless victim. There is evil in the world and if evil has a gun, I want one too. "

It is this last sentiment about being a victim that I find to be very common in many folks from around my neck of the woods (rural southern/south central US) that I think is often misunderstood or completely missed.
