I think pointing the finger at Trump after the El Paso shooting is, although legitimate, probably unhelpful.
It turns it into a Left/Right issue, where the MAGA brigade will just double down on their political allegiance, and the real issues of gun safety and growing white nationalism will be missed.
When someone shoots 20 innocent people it should be good/bad issue. A right/wrong issue. A normality/insanity issue.
That said, I think that a country which didn’t make any substantial changes after the Sandy Hook massacre, where 20 six and seven year old kids were shot and killed is never going to make any changes.
Agree with the Ssndy Hook part, however the finger pointing at Trump is absolutely spot on. He repeatedly talks about the invasion, mexican rapists, vermin etc. That is inciting hatred.
He is not John Smith on the street, he is the president and his words are amplified to millions of people.
I get it, and said I think it’s a legitimate comment. I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said.
But something can be true, but at the same time unhelpful.
You change the culture of the country. You help shape the culture to make it blindingly obvious that guns and ease of access to said guns are the issue. I highly doubt this guy's first gun, legal or not, was this AK-47. We can't say that some deadly weapons should be absolutely 100% accessible to all, while the occasional other deadly weapon is not available to any, or as you said someone will find a way to get that one that they can't have.Well the shooter had an AK-47. Not legal to buy in America, own, or even in stores. Not supporting mass shootings but any gun laws, the bad guys will still find a way to get a gun.
Obviously something needs to be done. I live in Louisiana and most people I know own 15-30 guns for hunting purposes. Never been a mass shooting here.
I do feel sorry for the communities in El Paso and Ohio for their loss. Sick twisted people are out there. Action does need to be taken in some way.
Thats where we differ tbh, he has been getting away with it for too long and look where its heading, he should have been called out from the beginning.
Fair enough. I hope you’re right and it helps hold him to account.
Just looking at social media over these 2 shootings is horrendous. The left shouting at the right and blaming them for El Paso, and the right shouting at the left and blaming them for Ohio.
Everyone will miss the real issues in an effort to blame the other side, and in a week’s time the news cycle will have moved on. Then we’ll all be back in here, far too quickly, to do it all again.
Thats going to happen regardless. Trump could kill someone live on air and his supporters would deny or excuse it as he is basically an amplified version of themselves.
Put aside whether it is a valid reason or not, he has at least identified something. So the US government should be either pumping huge sums into mental health issues/counselling in schools or if that won't have the desired effect within time/budget constraints (which it won't), then you have to deal with the other side where you can make progress.
That means admitting that people who may have issues can and will get hold of guns so to protect the public no one should be able to legally own a gun that can fire more than x amount of bullets per minute. That at least enables people time to hide/vacate and for police to try and neutralise a shooter with the fewest amount of casualties as possible.
It doesn't impede the rights to bear arms it just gives everyone a fighting chance if only six shooter style/bolt action weapons can be bought where the loading (& firing) takes far longer than just putting in another clip/magazine.
A really fresh idea would be outlawing killing people. I just may be the first to think of that.I would say start small, like passing a single piece of gun legislation after decades of gun violence to just to see what it feels like. Stop guns being stocked in supermarkets. Are guns advertised, have a look at that. Look at background checks, limit gun purchases per household, try and implement compulsory training and licensing restrictions, restrict NRA lobbying practices, change conceal and carry laws, what about a nationwide scheme where people can trade in a few of their 30 guns for cash? These are just off the top of my head, I'm sure with a bit of imagination and a will, there's all sorts of avenues that could be looked at
