Isnt the whole point of the 'right to bear arms', to prevent the government from taking over the people completely and undemocratically? The people have arms so that they can fight back.
I believe we are long past the days when Ma and Pa Kettle and their kin can defend themselves against even the local police force much less the Army, Navy and Air Forces of the United States.

Slightly off topic but on gun control in general, I was watching a programme about border security in Canada the other day and an American couple with their kids in the car had taken a wrong turn and ended up at the border and therefore got searched. The dad had a double holster thing with 2 pistols under his jacket and the mum had a pistol in the kids changing bag, asked what they were doing that needed them to carry their guns they just said 'going to the park' or something equally mundane.

What a mental culture.

I guess that's the whole issue...because weirdos can easily gets guns, normal people feel scared into getting their own gun to potentially defend their family.... But if the weirdos could no longer get access to guns, normal people would no longer be in danger of needing to defend themselves....

You obviously can never completely end these shootings, but you certainly can massively decrease these sad events....

Sadly it boils down to the money made in the gun industry, and the relationship the NRA has with the politicians....money is more important than the innocent lives of 6 year old kids going to school...

Video doing the rounds not too long ago about this father and son who were arguing with a neighbour about the bins, and ended up shooting and killing the neighbour. Over bins.

Mad country.

As a practical matter the Second Amendment was approved primarily in the hope that the new USA could avoid the taxation (surprise!) necessary to create and maintain a standing army in peacetime by relying more on a decentralized militia system. The argument for it was dressed up in the highflown rhetoric of the day which was quick to equate being taxed with being enslaved, puffed up language being key to any democracy. The USA continued to have a very, very small peacetime military until the post-Second World War era, when it maintained and grew its wartime forces into its current status, partly to keep up a beefy international presence for a new Cold War and partly because what would shortly become a military-industrial complex would prove such a powerful economic force.

And as someone suggested above, as a practical matter in the here and now, the notion of Jack Libberdy holding off the forces of the state with his trusty home arsenal is whimsical in the extreme.

No. It was a racist manifesto written to help the original sheriffs literally round up people of colour who needed guns to make them look tough.

Still to this day precious white boys need guns to help make a point.

Well the shooter had an AK-47. Not legal to buy in America, own, or even in stores. Not supporting mass shootings but any gun laws, the bad guys will still find a way to get a gun.
Obviously something needs to be done. I live in Louisiana and most people I know own 15-30 guns for hunting purposes. Never been a mass shooting here.
I do feel sorry for the communities in El Paso and Ohio for their loss. Sick twisted people are out there. Action does need to be taken in some way.
