Machismo.
Sorry Bruce, it was meant to be rhetorical, but you’ve highlighted the point with your answer. There is no reason for owning one...

... apart from making up for a lacking somewhere else.

Why can’t they be like people from Wigan who balance it by having large spoilers on their battered 04 plate Corsa? K’off the lot of them!

I have never touched a gun in my life, nor do I know anyone did. I never need to own a gun. Americans are horrible so it looks after all these mass shootings (massacres for me) they are like ''chill bro, amendments and all''.

It's just so obviously weird that an average Joe can go into a store in the US and come out with a machine gun built for the battlefield. If you could do this in the UK, France or any other place on earth, there would be mass shootings. It's really not that difficult to understand.

Speaking to some folk there who seem to support gun ownership, their logic is largely incomprehensible.

Isnt the whole point of the 'right to bear arms', to prevent the government from taking over the people completely and undemocratically? The people have arms so that they can fight back.

That nutters exist on both sides and that blaming Trump/Republicans as some are doing doesn't make sense given one of the shooters was a Bernie Sanders supporting socialist
The difference is we dont know the motive of one (although he was on an incel forum which could be a motive, and he also drew a hitlist of fellow pupils in school and was expelled so another possible motive), and the other posted a far right manifesto and did it for political reasons. So one did it because of immigrant and right wing politics, one has no motive yet but showed signs of being murderous regardless of politics

Slightly off topic but on gun control in general, I was watching a programme about border security in Canada the other day and an American couple with their kids in the car had taken a wrong turn and ended up at the border and therefore got searched. The dad had a double holster thing with 2 pistols under his jacket and the mum had a pistol in the kids changing bag, asked what they were doing that needed them to carry their guns they just said 'going to the park' or something equally mundane.

What a mental culture.

I used to think America was really clued up when I was younger. Now I kinda think they're more screwed up than clued up.

I am at a stage now and most are I think, is that they need a gun to protect themselves from other Americans— have they realised that the enemy is their neighbours and not this invisible enemy they think it’s exists.

If I was an American I’d own more body armour than guns tbh.

That's why doughnut sales are so high in America I suspect.

If people think the chances of a long-standing western democracy turning into an autocracy are high...

... then they need to leave their mother’s back room more often and find a girlfriend et al.
