Am I crazy or is Trump refusing to debate just an AWFUL strategic move for him?

fivethirtyeight.com's take this morning was insightful:

- Trump has lost every general election debate he's participated in, as measured by before/after polls.

- If he's ill, it'll show visually and in what he says. Reports suggest he sounded ill on the call to Fox Business this morning, and that he said nuttier stuff than usual.

Purportedly the campaign has backtracked and will push the debates back a week, but my opinion is that skipping the debates is rational. Their best bet is probably to go on a full-on Hunter-Biden-and-other-dirt offensive in the last ten days and hope they can disqualify enough mail-in ballots in the courts to win.

The wider Biden's lead becomes, the less I think that the courts will be inclined to hear Trump's arguments. Even in the more conservative states, I don't see judges putting themselves in the position of overturning an electoral landslide on technicalities.

If it's close electorally after counting the main-in ballots, that's a different story.

Does calling the President by his name, Trump, Donald Trump, in that text kinda goes against protocol? I always thought a President is referred to as Mr President, or President Whoever.

That’s fair enough but he did have the racist beatneck, Anne Coulter as his profile pic for a while and would often use the racist trope of referring to Obama by his full name. I mean I’m sure he’s a nice guy and I like his posts outside of here, but he’s clearly on the wind-up on these pages so don’t particularly have much sympathy if some libs say bad things. Thought that’s what it was all about tbh.

By every available measure he's losing. Another one of his lunatic rallies doesn't get him anything he doesn't already have.

He's got 26 days left and absolutely HAS to shift the trajectory of this race. The debates are the single biggest opportunity to do that, simply down to the number of eyeballs watching them.

Is pulling out just his campaign's way of admitting that he's incapable of moving votes over to his side in a debate too, so they might as well keep him out of the limelight and avoid doing even more damage? Genuinely can't see any other reason.

He got battered in the last debate - Trump without ability to interrupt and try to be the "alpha male" would be annihilated.

It's no surprise he's ducking it.
