St George's Day this Friday

I cheated a little, I thought it looked like the Ecuadar flag so I googled that first, so lets say I got it on my 4th guess and call it quits.

I used to be superb on Capitals, Currency and Flags, now not so hot.

It's only flags with me, I'm fairly sure it's purely from having seen the team select screens on football games thousands of times.

I used to read a lot when I was a nipper, lots of very boring books on geography and stuff, age has driven most of the Info from my mind or maybe that was the drugs, either way, im crap these days.

Calling DaveK.

I am really saddened when I read many of your posts none more so than those on this thread. How can you be so unhappy and miserable. Where you born that way or did it take a great deal of practice over the years. Apart from our team winning is there anything at all out there in the wide world which comes close to cheering you up or feeling less unhappy, please let us know so that we can come together and make life more bearable for you. Also for once keep politics out of it there is more to life than that.

Eh?

Genuinely bemused by this. I thought I usually come across as a jovial soul? No need for any intervention with me. I'm happy and well balanced. Physician heal thyself. (y)

Then Dave you should go and look at your posts and in the mirror, you really come across as a very unhappy soul vis a vis your Garlick avatar. If you feel you are happy and well balanced I am surprised. Next time I come down to Liverpool O am going to collect you and take you for a beer as long as I do not have to call at the Walton Insitute on Hornby Road. Mind no political discussions though.

 Kinda. Jesting aside, I've no problem with people being patriotic. Personally I'm of the opinion that generalisations tend to divide us as a species, be that through things like nationality, gender, race, religion or whatever and it appears like St Georges Day celebrates some kind of mythical personality that embodies being English. No idea where most people down here come from. All corners of the globe most probably. You learn pretty quickly to take people on their merits rather than what their birth certificate says.

Thats just me though. If folks want to wave a flag about then that's cool, not really any of my business is it. As long as they don't start bashing folks with it :D

So, if I celebrated St Georges day, what exactly would I be celebrating?

Sid James coping with Peggy Mount. George & the Dragon.

Seriously, St George is the patron saint of England, Germany and a lot of the old countries. In England it has always been the National Day. St George actually wasn't born in England but in a foreign land.

It's unclear to me. He's the patron saint of England and because the Celtic nations have their day then everyone in England 'should' apparently be getting out the bunting. I think it took off this mania for having a St George's Day when all the anti-Asian/Muslim propaganda kicked in. In that sense it's not racist per se. It's an attempt to isolate a particular community. That'd be my understanding of it.

I suppose now isn't the time to discuss how Ol' Georgie was little more than a 4th century terrorist and bacon seller who - rather than fight against the 'dragon' of the roman empire's persecution of christians - was probably busier slaughtering those nasty, nature loving pagans and their 'crazy' - or should that be 'extremist'? - religion and beliefs?

No, no it probably isn't.

That you have a bulldog or another form of boss dog, you are a member of your local golf club or society, you claim your not racist but still laugh at those racist jokes people get sent on their mobiles, you have two car flags on your car when England play in the world cup, you sing 'there was 10 German bombers in the air' with your mates, you buy The Sun, you eat your Xmas dinner after the Queen has made her speech and you are just a general normal, down to earth guy.

*waits for attacks on this posting, may buy popcorn

Pure unadulterated rubbish, get a life Dave and review your history books, St Georges day was celebrated long before any muslims settled here. You really come out with some stupid staements at times.

I remember as a kid in the 60's the calls for St Georges day to be made a bank holiday. Davek is just making mischief again.

By the way, it's the queens birthday today, Happy Birthday Queen!
