So, this Syria thing...

Jihadists will be the big winners of Assad's downfall. It's almost laughable: the West kills millions trying to get on top of the Al Qaeda network...and now they'll fire off hundreds of cruise missiles to aid them to victory and probably seize the type of weaponry that'll be used against western forces.

It's so ****ing daft the British military top brass miltary are advising against it.

Cameron must have his foreign war though...it'll look great on the CV when he retires and joins the boards of arms manufacturers.

I'm not sure it's as simple as that. Jihadi's aren't just out warmongering for the sake of it. The west, and Britain in particular, was always closely linked to the Arab states and it'd be in our interests to rebuild those links. Job's a good'un in Libya and will be soon in Syria.

But if that street was in, say, Luton...

I'm not even sure if I know what point you're trying to make, to be honest. To me, this is a fight between two evenly matched pugilists in a seedy part of town.

Any street mate, with any race. It's wrong to stand by and see the weak picked on, exploited or persecuted.

Bottom line here is, David and William puffed their chests out thinking uncle Sam will back them up.

Uncle Sam was told dont even think about it lads.

Hence climb down.

Go after North Korea, probably the worst dictatarship of human rights on earth.

Seems to me we only pick fights in the school yard with kids that dont have a big brother ffs!!!

I'm at a crossroads with this.

We haven't tried to sit down Bashar al-Assad and the FSA for formal talks, we've just waited for WMD to be used and then thrown all our eggs in. I have quite a lot of family in the armed-forces and a lot of them have just recently been called back into Cyprus for "additional training" - I don't want to see another war.

But then again, al-Assad is a ****ing monster.

Well when a dictator gasses his own people, I suppose the correct and moral thing to do would be to do all things possible to remove said dictator.

I'm confident thought that someone on here will somehow attempt to argue that it wouldn't be correct and/or moral.

Killing people to stop people from killing should always be the last option though, we haven't even gone down other avenues.

I completely agree,,, so why the brakes ?

Its definetly not the risk of innocent peoples lives, never seemed to matter before.

We haven't sat down both sides to try and come to a solution where no more people have to suffer.

I have a hell of a lot of family in the army and I know for a fact they're all crapping themselves, this war we're about to embark on isn't going to be simple.

While I understand your sentiments, especially where your family is concerned and your military connections, I can't agree with your logic here.

Once someone commits to gassing their own people, I think it's more than fair to say that a person like that can't be reasoned with. Normal diplomatic options don't exist. If the death of Bashir Assad means that no more Syrians die, then I'm all for it.

Now, that said, I'm not gung-ho here for going in gang busters with "troops on the ground." I'd prefer, if possible, a more surgical strike on his military apparatus which, I would hope, would neutralize his ability to not only fight back, but neutralize his ability to kill more Syrians.

I get where your coming from in terms of putting men and women in harms way but in my opinion, he crossed the point of no return in killing his own people with chemical weapons. He needs to be eliminated, preferably by his own people.

It wouldn't of gotten this bad if we intervened before hand - ie. When tanks were rolled out against peaceful protests last year.

Regardless of how we do it, innocent people will die and the fact that we're going in with so little planning (again) really annoys me.

When we get rid of him, then what?

Elections - and then we'll see Egypt happen again, but the people in charge will be even more crazed.

Killing people to stop them from killing other people isn't the answer.
