Should we have bought Pienaar this summer?

we should expect more from him in next season,he needed a year to adapt on culture the weather, language, style ,tempo and other things....i saw him couple of times in denmark with his previous team,he was quite good and i've thought it would be a great addition to our team to cover baines

Hell yes!

Pienaar has allowed Baines to flourish coming up from the back, their link up play at times is excellent. I'll take the point that they've both suffered dips in form, but who doesn't? You can go through the whole team and not one person has played consistently well for any team - even RVP has had his drought.

Pienaar has had one of his best seasons for us, scored some vital goals. But it's his link up play with Baines that is what we brought him back for.

Makes us tick and never hides. £5m for a player of his quality is a snip. Can't believe this is even being questioned. Also Oviedo is a left back, people should just accept that.

His form last season was the reason behind it, yes he hasn't been as good this season but I'm glad we brought him back.

Who would have played on our left if he didn't come back? Nobody.

This.

Of course we had numerous left sided options while he was gone or we could have easily purchased a left sided option who was as good or just as good as Pienaar.

Oh, wait. We're Everton. No we wouldn't have.

Yes

Baines benefits massively from having Pienaar in the side - whenever Pienaar and Mirallas switch flanks, Baines becomes less effective. Given that the majority of the chances we create come directly from Baines, having Pienaar back is a good thing.

Personally I don't think either he or Baines have been in anything like the form they were in pre-Christmas since the turn of the year. Perhaps one is to blame more than the other? I don't know, but what I do know is that we are a better side with Pienaar in it - the times we didn't have him last season should illustrate this. We probably paid marginally over the odds for Pienaar but then we knew that we were getting a sure thing as far as his relationship with Baines is concerned. Taking a chance on someone else would have been a gamble.

Oviedo isn't even half the player Pienaar is btw, and he runs into the same areas that Baines does, again making Baines less effective.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing though isn't it?

Very few blues didn't want him back. And he hasn't been THAT bad. Just hasn't reached the heights from before.

His holiday tweet badly pissed me off though.

had no choice after his loan form, if he moved to someone else and played like then people would of had a go at moyes for not signing him.

he no different to the last time before spurs, that why Moyes wouldn't make him top earner cos he not the whole package so he left.

BS he was one of our best players he was up there with arteta and baines at the time as to who was the best player

No he wasn't, that why I wasn't arsed when he left and when he came back, he is a good footballer but nothing special and didn't warrant being on the same wages as Mikel as he is a class above Pienaar.

He's been rubbish and doesn't look like he has the best attitude.

Waste of 4m and 45k a week if you as me, plus he's getting no younger and now has next to no sell on value.

For 4mil and 45k a week, plus an almost telepathic link up play with Baines, with a proven track record at Everton, who else would you have suggested we buy/bought?

He's had a bit of a dip in form but even with that dip you can see how much it benefited Baines. When Pienaar was out with red card Baines was wanting to stay back and defend a lot of the time because he didn't trust the player infront to either keep hold of the ball and set him off down the line or track back if its lost. You can see how comfortable Baines is to go forward when he is playing, passes into his feet, trusts him to keep hold of it and send him down the line or do another one two. Also Pienaar does track back well, seen a few where he's bust a gut and got a tackle in that's got us on the counter.

i wouldn't have paid the amount spurs wanted in the summer if i'm honest. Think i said at the time any more than £3m and tell spurs to f off. Nobody else wanted him and spurs certainly didn't? i know he made us click, but it didn't make the greatest business sense (and that's not just in hindsight) but then again i've never been a massive fan of his - only noticed how good he was when he was gone though ... or was it the fact we had gueye as his replacement?
