Should we have bought Pienaar this summer?

Oviedo should be played more regardless of whether Pienaar signed. The lad needs to make his mistakes and then learn from then much like Coleman did, and look at the progress he has made because of regular football.

What winger would we have bought for £4.5m?

How the flying fook could we know that?

Had you heard of Oviedo before he signed? Or are you suggesting Pineaar was the only winger on the planet avalible for under 5m

The drop in Baines form, a slight drop I know, probably due to games played and an ongoing injury... Has coincided with Pienaar playing gash...
Baines makes him look a lot better than he is..

I get the impression it was done to please the fans and maybe the players and the manager, too. Nobody's going to criticise the club for bringing back pienaar after his great loan spell, you know?

But the fee, his age, his form. It might not be the slam dunk it looked.

I know for example jelavic was asking the manager pretty much every day what was happening . I absolutely agree with you on your points though, it made sense footballing wise but business wise starting from his contract negotiatons and ending with his signing it was a business disaster .

You can almost always make footballing arguments for signings but if we want a real sustainable business plan it should be the "low ages, low wages " one really .

He's equalled his career best goal scoring return for a season and chipped in with 6/7 assists too.

He's not been at his best as we can all see but it's good to have him back, i'd be playing him in field a bit more though, he runs around like a blue arsed fly chasing down and leaves far too much space out wide.

What's he on, 7 goals and 7 assists in all competitions? That's not a bad return considering he's missed games through bans.

His biggest attribute for us is that he allows Baines to play the way we want him too.

I think the pair of them are knackered and could have done with resting in the cup games, or just more time for Oviedo to rest them

No coincidence that they've both dipped in form at a similar time

Oviedo cost £1.5m and is on a wage.

Pienaar cost £4m and is on a wage, a fairly high one at that.

If we hadn't bought Pienaar we could have spent about £7m on a player plus wages.

Or in other words, two Kevin Mirallas' instead of one.
