I think Martinez was trying to see how Hibbert performs when pushed higher on the pitch, and it looks like it has not worked.
These are common experments Martinez would perform during pre-season, like putting Barkpey in the def. midfielder role.
In competitive games, putting Hibbert in a deeper role and push the left back higher on the pitch would be a possible setup for Martinez.

If coleman is injured, I think we would go with three at the back rather than let that liability get near the pitch again.
I don't think the tactics vs CV suited Hibbert. He is an old fashioned defender, uncomfortable with the ball, and when pushing forward. If Hibbert plays, and I hope he does, then we must alter our tactics accordingly to suit that style. Otherwise, what that Nolito did (hat-trick) will happen again.
For me, if Coleman plays (and I prefer him to Hibbert overall), we should play more adventurously. But when Hibbert plays, I think a 'Keep It tight and pinch one' type strategy/mentality should be employed. And for such tactics, there is no better defender in the Premier League than Tony Hibbert...Everton legend : when he scores, we ALL riot.

Should never have been given a new contract. We must move away from being too sentimental with players. Like any decent club, when past their best, get rid.
Respectfully disagree. I believe the relationship we have with players is one of the things that keeps talents like Baines, Barkley and Stones here on far less money than they could get elsewhere and also attracts others like Lukaku. Here they are not just an asset to be sold when past their best - they are a person with skills and knowledge that can be valuable.

A lot of our players past and present say how much at home they felt/feel in the club and how important it is, if we throw players like Hibbo on the scrapheap just because they cannot perform as a modern attacking winger I think we lose a lot of what differentiates us from other clubs.

Doesn't mean that Hibbert should be 2nd choice, personally would prefer we brought/loaned someone like Gamboa/Yedlin or if we are skint use Browning there, but as 3rd choice think he is fine as long as we change our tactics a bit to accomodate his strengths/weaknesses.

in all honesty i dont think he should be second right back at all. let coleman play in the europa league, i know he had a decent season last year but hibbo is the better player imo.

partially agree...but as I said in my post above, if we are playing a more expansive game, then Coleman should play RB. Pure defensively though?...Hibbert is my first choice

Personally think Stones is not very good at right back. The Oviedo idea is intriguing. Besic played on the back line at former clubs.

I know Hibbo is a blue and is loyal to the club but he is finished as a PL footballer for about two seasons. He rarely fit enough to play and has lost yard of pace. Should have released him this summer but still can offer him a coaching role at the club.

...I'm afraid he looks like a rabbit in the headlights every time he gets the ball and my fear is that this unease spreads across the back four in a team encouraged to pass. I can only think RM likes his influence around FF which is fine, but I have no idea about his potential to coach. We want the best coaches and playing for a club for 15 years isn't a qualification for that.

6 prem starts in 2 years, enough said

He shouldn't even be at the club any more.

Was a liability 3 years ago, sure he could do a job for somebody in the championship if they are looking for a limited but steady full back for that level.

In the celta vigo match, Hibbert was pushed really far up the pitch a lot of the time. That's not really his game and he doesn't have the legs to get back. I think if he's called into duty during the season he'll not be so adventurous, and he's a good defender.

A defender that can play CB and RB would be a good idea to get in, but I don't think we specifically need to buy a 2nd choice right back.
