Royston Drenthe

No one's saying that we shouldn't sign Drenthe or leave him on the bench because of his defensive flaws but the cold hard truth is that he's erratic and mental. While going forward that's good at times he loses the ball a lot because he over complicates things and when this happens he often stands around in the opposition half while they break, before tracking back and conceding a free kick with a rash challenge. Moyes publicly criticising him about this is wrong, though - he doesn't criticise Neville for never playing a pass longer than 5 yards or Cahill for never scoring.

No one's saying we should take the unpredictability out of his attacking game, but if we can build on his defensive side then why not?

Why does every 1 suddenly have to have such polarised opinions these days. I like drenthe but accept that to play 90 mins every week there are things he needs to work on. Just as there are with coleman and straq and velios and many other fringe players. As for the ' hes played for madrid' claim- well have you seen their defending! If u ask any manager in the prem they would tell u the same thing about drenthe - for example see ben arfa at the toon - rarely starts a game

why is everyone so obsessed with his defending abilities, we paly a back four and two holding midfielders. Suerly we have enough cover.

Ding ding ding! Correct answer!

Naht.

Ashley Young and Evra both running at Tony Hibbert while a winger stands on the halfway line? Sounds good to me. Who needs wingers to track back? In fact, I propose we play with 8 forwards and no goalkeeper.

Maybe a more positive team would pin the opposition winger an fullback back. I never said don't track back but people are starting to have a go at his defending instead of what he brings us elsewhere.

People are not obsessed with his defending as such. It's his irresponsible actions in defensive area's and his liability to do something irrational ie sending off which then could leave the team in trouble.

But he's a awesome player... People are just agreeing with moyes that there are bits of his game that need working on in order to get him playing 90mins every week and being able to trust him to think of the team also in his actions.

I don't think anyone, certainly not me is saying drenthe is not a breath of fresh air and want him signed up ASAP

He's worth the very pretty penny the club want to pay him. However he wants more, apparently, so it would seem that everyone is in agreement that we should sign Drenthe apart from the man himself. He's a liability, make no mistake. But he's worth it.

its not like he doesnt track back though, the work rate is there, like others have said any mistakes he makes get magnified to fit peoples stereotype of him being a liablilty, then model pros like neville, who has actually cost us games with us utter lack of ability get away with it.

Really like him more after listening to this interview. Big enough to say he felt responsible for giving away the free kick but felt he was gonna get the ball. Doesn't seem to be an ego at all, knows he's still getting used to the Premier League.
Also, his laughing then "no but seriously" style made me giggle as he goes completely deadpan.

Surprisingly humble interview after everything I had read. (Also love that enormous diamond star earring he's sporting).

Seems like he has the right attitude here, just needs to corral his wildness a little bit (but just a little).

Good shout

Anyone who thinks we shouldn't do everything in our power to sign Drenthe up on a permanent deal because of some perceived lack of defensive play needs to have a serious word with themselves.

I mean really?

REALLY?

Are there really Evertonians who would have reservations about signing this guy? Please tell me we don't have supporters that thick. Say it ain't so.
