Royston Drenthe

So, at 24 going on 25, when would he become the "complete package"? When you consider he was a regular at Real Madrid until Marcelo arrived, why was he getting regular games there with obvious deficiencies in his game?

I'm not sure what it is you're trying to argue exactly. I like Drenthe, but he's clearly not a world class, fully matured player. He's got the attitude of a teenager in many respects.

Surely your argument doesn't just rest on 'He's played for Madrid so he must be good enough for them' ?

Just take a look at the loan market in the PL. Normally the players going on loan will either be:

Young players yet to have enough experience to break into the first team
or
Squad players who have fallen out of favour and are either looking to get more first team football, or advertise to possible buyers.

Drenthe falls firmly into the second category. After his injury he fell out of contention for the first team, and Madrid are now at the point where they are happy for him to leave on a free at the end of the season.

Discuss, not argue.

Perhaps we differ in the definition of a squad player. I wouldn't imagine that a squad player would be a regular starter for any side, let alone RM. Of course, I don't know what those games were that he started in, perhaps lesser games, but without belaboring the point, unless its stipulated in the loan, I don't see why we would invest time & energy in developing a 24 year old's weaknesses if we weren't aiming to sign him.

Loan's aren't gonna be complete technically unless they're attitude is a bit suspect, they're coming from South America and the club needs to put them in the window, or Man City bought another Adebayor and found they had one to many very expensive world class players.
I like Drenthe, but i feel he does need a little mental discipline, not regarding his tackling but his wandering. Saying that if the defensive centre mid is paying attention the should be able to float over and cover the hole, maybe it's just Neville that responds slowly to huge gaps on our right side so poor Tony gets a bit of DP.

It does seem a bit unfair that Moyes is publically criticising the defensive aspect of Drenthe's game when every single thing that Neville does is dire.

Anyone who thinks we shouldn't do everything in our power to sign Drenthe up on a permanent deal because of some perceived lack of defensive play needs to have a serious word with themselves.

I mean really?

REALLY?

Are there really Evertonians who would have reservations about signing this guy? Please tell me we don't have supporters that thick. Say it ain't so.

I've had a moment of clarity Brennan... I think my point is that I don't believe we should be working to fix the problems a loan player has. Game time, match fitness, etc, no problem. Inadequacies of the player, I don't think that's our job. (Unless, as I stated earlier, it was a condition of the loan)

Does that make sense?

It's not about him being more defensive.... It's about him being less irresponsible!

Moyes is petrified that whilst winning a game ( let's say the coming Sunderland game for eg) that drenthe will run back and hack down a winger giving away a penalty and getting sent off in the process leaving us with 10 men.

That's his issue with drenthe, not that he may not always pick up his runner!!

Talk about him conceding the free kick they scored from (which once again disproves the he doesn't track back bollocks) seems a bit off when before in the same game both Distin and Fellaini gave away free kicks near the edge of our area which could so easily of been punished.

As i said before, there is no harm in trying to eradicate the poor parts of any players game, but it must never come at the expense of the good parts.

Turn him into a safe and steady 5 yard passer who doesn't gove the ball away ever and you lose the player who is so dangerous at the other end.

Its a tricky one but so far his positives far outweigh his negatives so i'd take him making the wrong choice once or twice a game but scoring and setting up goals than Nevilles crappy passes straight out of posession and letting men run past him.

Which apparently isn't an issue for Moyes.

Tim Cahill gives away stupid freekicks in dangerous areas at least once a game and is a terrible tackler. I have never heard him being called a defensive liability.

also he doesnt lose the ball any more than the majority of our team. Moyes sees what he wants to see, this is why we will be playing home games in front of 20k fans soon.

All players give away stupid free kicks. Cahill wouldn't needlessly give away a penalty and/ or get sent off for a rash stupid challenge that he was never going to win.

Drenthe would !!

If were winning 1-0 with 10-20 mins left in the semi of the cup I'd want drenthe off and Coleman or ossie on to replace. I love drenthe but he is a ticking time bomb.. Start him let him do his stuff get us in front then take him off before he implodes!

It's the fact that he would hilga!

His dismissal in the league cup pretty much cost us that game.

Hey I'm not ****ging him or saying don't play him just moyes is right to be cautious and in a important cup game if were winning my bum would be alot less twitchy if drenthe had come off going into the last 10-20 mins

You're basing this off the 10 games Drenthe has played this year? Really?

Take a risk once in a while, you might like it :)

Unbelievable folks, I've seen it all now, new scape goat of the week is Drenthe for stuff he hasn't actually done.

Pass me the glue ffs.

Did drenthe not make a stupid challenge against Chelsea which saw him see red?? Leaving us a man down in extra time???

Made the same challenge against city and was lucky as he'll not to see red!

If ur happy to run that risk late in a cup game and risk wembley so be it...

I'd prefer to see him do the business then come off near the the end to sure up and book a ticket for wembley
