Rooney U23 coach?

The best finisher to ever graduate from our academy, seen and won practically everything. Our academy should be moving to secure him and help the next generation of finishers, god knows we need it.

There's definitely a position available with our 18s and perhaps with the 21s if Tait was willing to step back down to his old job. It might be a move that suits all parties.

We're not a basket case.

What I've respected about Rooney at Derby & Plymouth is he's immersed himself at the club.

But he's a terrible coach. Let him be a pundit, he's half decent at that.

Haven't had a decent player breakthrough for years, won't be happening if we keep hiring ex-playera "just because".

I guess the problem is that just because you have the talent, it doesn’t mean you can teach it.

It was always so raw and instinctive with Rooney that I could imagine him finding it difficult to articulate it to others.

Lampard springs to mind also. Couldn't understand why players he coached weren't at his level. Rooney (and Lampard) both offer great analysis imo in pundit roles because they're smart with football, but they also have it come natural to them. I'd rather they both stayed away from coaching.

Nah.

Having an incredibly high profile former player with established managerial ambitions hovering around the place is always gonna be an issue. The most highly regarded coaches in the game are very rarely in place because of their playing achievements.

Keep him as far away from the club as possible. He's proven himself a woeful manager and it's clear he's an appalling communicator. Just because you've won a load of trophies does not qualify you to become a coach. Steer clear ffs.

I think having him over in Tait's job would be a reasonable move. He can learn the ropes and would be evaluated if he can make the shift to the first team. He has had the influence of Sir Alex for the longest time, time for him to learn some tactical stuff too. U21 coach will receive directives from both the DoF and the First Team Manager about the expected style of play.
